Cawood never got a home playoff game with one or two or three or four wins, but the point is valid. Everything is different with the expanded playoffs and more classes. Harlan is going to do what I expected in August, beat Pineville and Jenkins and be at home for a winnable game in the playoffs.

 

I was looking back at 1968 records the other day when Harlan was 10-0-1 and DIDN'T make the playoffs. They tied Lynch, and Lynch won the state championship that year. Harlan may have been the second best team in the state and didn't even win a district title.

 

Or how about if you were 1968isaac and played on powerhouse teams that had to beat DANVILLE just to win a district championship? Cawood was 0-8 in the playoffs from 1982 to 1990 but had to play Danville three times, Covington Catholic three times and Highlands twice.

 

It's not the current players' fault that the playoff system has changed.

 

I agree HDE the system is set up to make more games resulting in making more money. It is not the Players' fault.

A win vs. Jenkins wont "make their season." Harlan's players and coaches know fully well that this season has not been the type of season that they wanted or have come to expect over the years. It will be, however, a little vindication of a tough non-district schedule with a team that has only 3 seniors, only one of which played 4 years. As far as them having similar programs, look at the history of the 2 teams and I think you will see that Harlan has enjoyed decades of good football. Harlan simply played the hand they were dealt this season, and a home playoff game would be a nice reward for continuing to fight when they could have folded their tents. Unfortunately, this is not a video game that you can hit "replay" when things arent going well and this season certainly isnt "living the dream."

You might want to check again because Im almost positive that Cawood beat Lincoln Co in the opening round in 1982 and then got beat in the 2cd round. I believe that was the last year of the crazy sub-districts. In 1981, Cawood and Lincoln both finished undefeated ranked #1 and #2 in the state and had to play in the first round.

Seems like a lifetime ago. I was a 13 year old kid then. Culley would not let all freshman dress so I was on the bus but did not even wear a coat. It was extremely cold and I about froze to death. I remember that much and riding a charter bus and David Hensley running all over Lincoln County. We never could beat Danville and it was our own fault! Back to the future..... I think Harlan will win over Jenkins but by a slim margin. We just don't have the ability to put up a bunch of points. As many have said, these guys are to be commended for playing the hand dealt. I'm proud of all of them. I do feel for the Seniors of this and last years teams. I hope they enjoy(ed) HS football. They may play a few post season games.:thumb: Some of the best memories of my life and I know Outlaw could say the same. There, my longest post yet.
