The article even said the Padres seemed to be really far along in talks with the Braves for him. Also Peavy said he wants to pitch for an NL team before he waives his trade clause for an AL team.

Here's a quote from another article: San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy, the Cy Young Award winner currently being dangled in trade talks, initially indicated to the Padres that he would prefer a deal to one of five teams -- Atlanta, St. Louis, the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. But because San Diego apparently isn't close to honing in on a deal with any of those five, sources say that the Padres are reaching out to other teams, as well. It also sounds as if the Braves don't want to talk about several of the players that the Padres are interested in: The Braves are probably the best-equipped team among those named by Peavy to complete a deal. I know it isn't a one team race but I still feel the Braves are the favorite to land him if they do indeed trade him. IMO even though the Braves don't want to give up one of their better prospects, they would if it brings Peavy in. They'd be crazy not too.

A healthy Chipper Jones is by far the Brave's best and most consistent defensive player.

I don't know that I'd put a lot of faith in that link, EKU. It was Chipper saying he got hosed, not anyone else--the people that voted for it didn't think so. I don't think it was Wright's offensive numbers as much as the fact that he played 159 games at 3rd compared to Jones 126 games and in doing so had 400 total chances compared to Chipper's 301. Wright also had a better range factor of 2.52 compared to 2.39. More people had more chances to see Wright make more plays. Chipper had a better fielding percentage but missed almost a quarter of a season.

According to MLB.com beat writer Mark Bowman, the Braves are preparing a pitch for Jake Peavy. Citing a team official knowledgeable on the situation, Bowman reports the Braves have already had preliminary discussions with the Padres to gauge what kind of package would have to be put together in order to land the former Cy Young winner. At this point, writes Bowman, the Braves are essentially in a holding pattern, waiting for the Padres to consider other deals from other teams. And it might be a long wait. According to the report, the package the Braves are preparing would include top prospects, but it could also be improved if either second baseman Kelly Johnson or shortstop Yunel Escobar are included. Bowman thinks the Padres would have to include Khalil Green for the Braves to consider dealing Escobar. Peavy has said he'd waive is no-trade clause to pitch for Atlanta.

October 20, 200817 yr Author According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are not a serious player for Jake Peavy. Miklasz's Cardinals sources downplayed the idea and noted that they've only had one conversation with the Padres. As Miklasz says, it could be the money, the prospects, or both. Viva El Birdos believes it would limit roster construction. If the Cardinals take a pass and the Astros don't have the goods, it might be down to the Braves, Dodgers, and Cubs. Count out the Mets and Yankees to after he made it clear he doesn't want to play in the AL and doesn't want to play in New York.
