Right now - Oct. 15 through the end of football season - is the time that you can't blame basketball coaches for thinking they get the short end of the stick when they cooperate and encourage kids to play a fall sport. Sharing is a one way street because the basketball coaches miss out on up to two months of instruction while the gridiron guys have all their players from the first day of practice through the last day of the season.

Thoughts?

You're a smart man Plato. I agree 100%.

I'm all for kids getting to experience many things in high school and playing multiple sports, but it is a sacrifice roundball teams make that should be noted.

The same goes for baseball coaches in the spring.

Yeah the first week o the season is a complete joke. Footballers don't even have a week of practice under their belt.

I don't understand. Football this year: July 15 is the first day of practice. August 30th was the first game played this year.

I think he's talking about football players coming out and playing basketball right after football season ends.

I think we do start basketball WAY too early. Ohio starts practice exactly one month later and have minimal problems. (At least they did a couple of years ago, I think it's still November 15th.)

That's insane. Kentucky basketball begins on the first Monday after Thanksgiving. Last year that was 11/26. 11 days ....? lol! And if you start on 11/15, 2 days are lost right off the bat for Thanksgiving.

Kentucky has been considered a basketball state. Football has come a long ways in this state, but right now at best its half and half. I do not understand why football is starting a week later. I think it needs to go back to being started a week earlier and ending a week earlier. The season still has the same length, but it is done a little sooner.

No matter when one starts and the others begin basketball coaches should be respectful of football finishing up....this doesnt happen and basketball coaches make the athletes chose sports, coaches say they dont...but it happens on a daily basis.

:thumb:This is very true.

It doesn't happen everywhere, I can guarantee you that. This is more of an issue at smaller schools as you don't have the ability to make kids choose sports, which you should never do. The same twelve or thirteen athletes play all major sports, which really puts them behind the eight ball in the first few weeks of their perspective sports.

Its a problem at large schools as well....and it happens more often! More athletes means more issues IMO!

According to KHSAA - Practice cannot start earlier than July 15, but practice in full pads cannot start earlier than August 1 or 7 weekdays prior to first day of school. In our schools' case it was July 23 with first game being August 30.

With many schools starting mid August, it is crazy to wait until August 30th for the first game.

I would like to have that type of problem.
