...and your point is...You have superior academic schools with superior football programs and you are going to take issue with those schools because people want to send their kids to school there. I don't get it!!!

Every school can do this. No school district is not permitted to build a good football or any athletic program. Maybe the answer is to make your school safer and more academically successful.

I don't understand "tuition" students. You can live outside of a school district and still attend that school. That would be a huge advantage over schools that don't allow this.

It is and it isn't. Tuition students are very important to $chools. Most schools take them. Holmes takes them, the Kenton County schools take them, Ludlow takes them. I could go on and on.

Boone County doesn't take them, but that is due to the growth issue in the county.

You don't just get into a school because you want to, you have to be a decent student and a good citizen.

Good athletes who are not good students are just not worth the risk. State testing is to important.

I have read many posts in here over the last couple of years, Bashing the Teams that have taken it to the next level. Two that seem to top the list are consitantly Beechwood and Highlands. Do they deserve all the sideways comments, do these folks think that the Josh Conners and Adam Dempsys drop from the sky? Or that Nieko Tiepel and Dominic Mainello just walked on the field and had that talent/ HECK NO! The programs that they are associated with have given them the knowledge and training and they have supplied th blood, sweat and grit to be the best of ths best.

I put the blame on the teams that settle for mediocracy year in and year out, they could be on top if they chose to. Put the Ludlow players in the Beechwood systym and the Tigers success would surface, put Dixie under Highlands supervision you would see State rings. They just dont settle for second best!

I call for the rest to step up!!

 

I agree with you 100%. Schools that settle for 3-7 or 4-6 records every year shouldn't be proud of that. Beechwood and Highlands have nothing to be talked about besides the success they have. The kids give effort, they have great support from fans, parents, administration and so on... I know people have used the "R" word in regards to Beechwood and Highlands but what would either of these teams have to gain from recruiting kids. Also take a look at these schools academics. Not only do they have athletes, but their athletes take pride in academics.

Most people realize that talk is just that. Talk. Tuition students have come to Highlands for years because they feel that playing for a high profile program is going to give them a step up when it comes to being recognized as a potential college athlete. A good program, either from an athletic or educational standpoint, doesn't have to recruit. The results speak for them.

You're under the assumption that they care what people say. People who know the truth don't worry about what others think.

This is the whole problem.

 

It really depends on your perspective as to whether its a problem. As a parent, I'm really into parental choice rights. I want the unfettered right to send my kids to the school that I think will be the most beneficial for them, athletically and academically. Period. To place "which teams win games and which teams lose games" over those rights is wrong and totally misguided in my opinion. And to shackle a kid to a specific school isn't what America is about. Its about being able to choose the person of your choice to be your spouse; its about working for the employer of your choice; its about living in the city or town of your choice. To restrict a kid to a specific district, for the mere sake of trying to control who wins what game is simply misplacing priorities.

 

Lots of people give lip service to "its not whether you win or lose, its how you play the game"; lots of people say what you learn about participating in athletics is more important than winning or losing. But those very same people forget about that stuff when their teams don't win as many games as they think they should. Its as hypocritical as can be. I think lots of people forget the mission statement of the KHSAA: " The KHSAA shall establish, promote and deliver the highest quality interscholastic athletic programs and activities in an efficient and progressive manner that emphasize participation, safety, sportsmanship and integrity to enhance the educational experience of the student-athlete". (emphasis added). I see nothing in there about placing restrictions on student athletes to make sure some schools don't win too many games or to offset advantages that some perceive certain schools to have. If anything, the lack of eligibility restrictions promotes competition amongst schools to deliver the highest quality athletic programs to minimize kids wanting to leave.

 

Do I want to win state each year? You betcha I do. But when we don't, I'm okay with it as long as I feel the coaches and players have given it their full effort; their full committment, and the kids have learned values of discipline, team work, leadership, hard work and committment. Those are the things that I as a parent want my kids to have learned by participating in high school athletcs. Those are the things that will mean much, much more in 10 years than whether you won a state championship or not in high school. As Mueller likes to say, he'll judge whether he was a successful coach with any one team when he looks at the players on that team when they are 30 and sees if they have become good husbands, good fathers and good contributors to society. If they have, then he was a successful coach with that team. If not, he'll have failed with that team even if they had won state. And he is absolutely correct.

 

And those things can be found in many, many schools throughout this Commonwealth, not only those that are dominant in football.

Agreed. I am more proud of my older son for getting an A on his macro-economics mid term at Centre this past week than any of his football accomplishments (yes Ru, even his selection to the All BGP team ).

Highlands does not get all of the best athletes in Ft. Thomas. Some go to Newport Catholic. If Highlands got all of these athletes it would be truly amazing. I don't think Highlands gets as many tuition students as they potentially lose to NewCath.
