Who does everyone think is the best big man in the state? Just some names that stick out to me are:

 

Richie Phares

Vinny Zollo

Dakota Euton

Elijah Pittman

Timmy Knipp

Matt St. John

Leonard Macon

Justin Jones

Robert Warren

Garrison Collins

 

I know I am missing some good ones. I believe Manual and J'town both have big men with good size that are developing.

Adair's Darren Ballou is big, but since he doesn't really like to mix it up down low he's not really a "big man" in the true sense of the word.

I left his name off on accident. He deserves to be on the list. When I have seen him before he has played the trailer spot a lot, but he is a big man IMO. He definitly deserves mentioning. Hes a very nice player.

I think that is a good point. All teams are not configured with a traditional post presence. Also, some utilize the post better than others and run plays to isolate the post, others don't - to their credit Scott County is effective at this. So by big men, does it mean big guys that are good basketball players or people that play the post?

 

Also, I have never seen Zollo play as he has been injured. Is it just a given that he is one of the best in the state because UK offered, or has he actually proven this? Just asking.

By watching that video, nothing special. I mean he may be a good player but you can't just watch that video & see why Ky offered him.

Of those on the list, I've only seen Phares, Euton, Collins, Ballou, and Knipp. From what little I've seen, I would go with Phares.

Add'l names.

Satterwhite - Western Hills good rebounder and defender.

Donovan - Franklin County plays more wing than post.

And there is a new big guy at Bryan Station who has good size and decent skills.

 

Having not seen Zollo...I believe Phares to be the most effective post presence, and Scott County takes good advantage of that. I don't see Euton as a significant post player, but a good big wing player. Collins can be very effective, but I haven't seen him in a whole game situation yet. I haven't seen Ballou, and I don't know who a couple of the other guys were.

 

As these guys go into college....it will hard to make a living in the post alone unless you are 6'9" or bigger.

Knipp and Euton don't go inside that much as far as posting up, but both are inside on defense. Both also rebound the ball pretty well. They do kindof fit the description of being big men literally.

What class is Zollo in ?

You're right it makes comparisons difficult because different team offenses require different big man skill sets. But at the end of the day, they are both big and they are both good players.

I left Leonard Macon off my earlier discussion. At the high school level, an absolute "beast" inside. I hope to watch him on Sundays some day.
