It was on another post that I said those two for Nady and a minor leaguer. I also said I would go after Orlando Hudson who will be a FA. I guess I was kinda looking at it more like Phillips and Arroyo for Nady, Hudson, and a prospect.

But you can't look at it like that. You have to get full value for your players on the trade market, and "Nady and a prospect" aren't full value for Phillips and Arroyo.

 

Phillips is also about 3-4 years younger than Hudson, and any long-term deal with Hudson has some risk involved because of his age.

The bottom line is that Phillips is not a #3 or #4 hitter. If he's in the 2-hole or somewhere later in the lineup he'll do well. QUOTE]

 

That IS the bottom line when you're comparing BP to just about any other second basemen...the Reds made the ingenious move to make him a cleanup hitter. No other 2nd basemen is being asked to do what he is...especially after Dunn and Griffey were dealt. I always thought that was a stupid move to put him at the #4 spot.

 

He has the potential to be a right-handed version of what the Reds had with Joe Morgan...great defense, speed on the bases, and a little pop in the bat. I don't know that he'd ever hit for the average that Joe did, but even that might improve somewhat if he wasn't swinging for the fences.

Phillips is overrated by some Reds fans, but he's still a quality player.

Bruce, Phillips, Votto, Encarnacion, and Dickerson will be the definates coming into training camp based on performance this year. We need help at catcher and the other OF position.

Uggla is the 2nd option after Ramirez and Utley is the 3rd option behind Rollins and Howard. The Reds rely on BP to do it all. Hit for average, power, steal bases, play great defense, and be a leader.
