How much stock do colleges put in the Bolus rankings? No question some very good players on the list, but also some extremely good players off the list.

I think today anyone that has a computer can do a little research and throw out a list of some of the best players in the state.

 

From what I've seen in his camps, its about the money.

 

My point here is that I seriously doubt colleges put much stock in the Bolus Rankings because they don't need them. There is too much other information out there about players, as well as opportunities to see kids play to determine how they stack up.

 

Think about it.....he hypes up his rankings to create a perception about his camp in order to get kids to attend his camp. The more controversy he can create about his rankings the more his name stays out there.

 

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Rivals has Gelawn Guyn ranked #123 in the nation among juniors, Euton is no where to be found in the top 150.

Euton is a very good high school player but we'd all be kidding ourselves if we didn't admit his rankings are up due to committing to UK. Jackson is the better player out of the two.

Once again I believe Bolus shows he can be somewhat clueless. The biggest problem I have is with his top 6 underclassmen list. There is no Ricardo Johnson, Elijah Pittman or Ge'lawn Guyn. Which really I don't see how he could only pick 6 underclassmen with the abundance of really good underclassmen. He also left off Robbie Stenzel and Josh Whitaker.

 

Also, I thought that Shaquille Wilson was going to be a senior this year. Does anyone know for sure?

I had a coach tell me that he had a player that had 1 good game - but it happened to be at a venue where a lot of people saw it - and the kid was on the all-america watch for two years. I would propose that we are becoming the "Sports Center Generation"....meaning we value players that can provide highlight clips rather than players that show up every game, play defense, team offense and contribute to winning.....not whining.

The problem with Bolus is that it appears he has been doing research on another sport, but is still trying to put together a list of basketball players.

The only difference between a Bolus ranking and anyone else on this board, is Bolus tries to sell his rankings. I have never met a college coach that bought one though, so I think the main purpose of his rankings as some other posters alluded to is too sell you a spot in his camp.

Anyone that gets around the state much can shoot a lot of holes in Bolus's ranking, but bottom line, his opinion is as good as anyone else's, but certainly not better. I don't think Bolus himself really watches these kids play, he just gathers information and then "spins" it anyway he wants.

I just think there is an abundance of talent in Ky right now compared to what it has been and I think its sad that more players aren't getting much publicity. I think there is a lot of future D-1 players around right now.

:thumb: I agree. We in Kentucky as well have allowed certain people throw out phrases such as this is not a strong a year....before the year even starts. It is difficult to have a barometer, but it seemed to me that most if not all Kentucky-based AAU teams did very well this summer including against teams that load up on regional or national talent.

I saw several on the list at the "Seniors vs. Juniors" game held at Mason County just prior to the KY-IN games. It was just one game, but I thought that Jenkins and Phares were the best that night.

I am not the greatest Guyn fan, but he should definitely be one of the top 6 underclassmen in KY.

Is that when he got hurt....I know he missed the Ky Ellite Camp because he was hurt and didn't get to play much this summer.

There is no record of him playing at all in Bolus' camp. I looked at who played this past year and the year before and all the box scores and what not, and he never participated. He didn't have a team to be showcased by. As far as the rankings, after looking at who participated in the camp its easy to see why some are overrated.

At least one good thing about the camp is that it gives players, who: 1) don't play for Scott County, 2) don't have dad's or fans hyping them up, and 3) don't show up as regular topics on threads, the opportunity to: 1) play in the same venue with some of those that do; 2) get a chance to compare their skill levels with those players whereas they would never get a chance otherwise; and 3) showcase their talents where they may have not had another equal opportunity. Just another point of view.

Blue Chip/High Potential Camp and Recruiting Service had its hayday in the 80's. Bolus attracted some of the finest players in the country and put out a pretty good product. With the hundrede of other camps and recruiting services that have popped up in the last 2 decades, Bolus has become a money-making factory with very little benefit to the kids he takes $500 per week from.

Very few college coaches pay attention. Some of the locals show up for the all-star games at his camps, but not many.

I agree with Doomer that the camp does let some local kids shine, but I don't know if that's worth $500 per week.

There is no excuse for leaving off some of the kids like Pittman, Josh Whitaker and Stenzel. Even a casual fan knows that these kids have some serious talent.
