That's Pat - you're so right, Newport does have several god athletes. The feeder programs are descent too. I watched several of these young men from the time they were 5 years old starting out and it is a shame to watch them go through this. Especially the senior group - there is somewhere around 15 seniors on this team and they are very talented. In addition, all three classes had winning seasons as freshmen too so what is the problem, I wish someone could figure it out. The team has good speed the line has descent size and defense only lost 3 seniors from last season. Coach Hyder is a good coach and hopefully he will find away to get the winning back in place. IMO - it seems like everyone can run against Newport - so change the defense to a 5 -3 I believe that will control the running game for them. As far as offense - the line needs to work harder and believe in themselves too. The QB needs to start scanning his wide outs better - there were several times that the WO's were open and it seemed like the QB only focus on one. However, the season is still early and I believe that Coach Hyder will get it going in the right direction so Good Luck Cats - keep your heads up - you are talented and hopefully it will start showing.

From the above post it seems like Newport may have taken a step back while Whitley hs taken several steps forward. For a team to score 52 in a football game with the running clock is pretty good and from what I heard Whitley subbed down early. It was a close game at Whitley last year, with the Colonels winning 14-13, and this year on the road the Colonels score 52? What are they feeding those boys, gunpowder?

Lets not forget about Perry Central, LCC, Clay These are not easy games I think all of these teams are tough anybody could win. Perry showed that tonight. Lets go PCC:fight:

 

I think Whitley is a step above those two teams. I think they will be good ball games, but Whitley should be favored in both. It is Whitley's year!!!!

Some of the better athletes do end up at other schools NCC and Highlands.

Whitley County was able to get there Ofence linemen out to the next level and get blocks down field for there RB's Newports D line needs to do a better job holding the other O line up so the linebackers can make plays, Newport's LB's need to work more on getting out of block's, if they keep on the way they are going they will never be able to stop any one from running all over them. Newport O line is horrible they miss blocks they are slow off the ball and let there self be pushed back. Newport's line coach has his work cut out for him. I think Newport has a QB and RB that can get stuff done if the line will help them out just a little.

FYI, in 2006 Bethlehem was 11-2 and lost in the 1A region finals to eventual state champ Danville. The next year they were on our schedule.

 

Word is that Knox is dodging Corbin. Corbin has no reason to dodge Knox (34-14 win) in a rebuilding year. Knox has NEVER beat Corbin. (that is a PERIOD) Get your facts straight please.

The 5-3 defense still puts 8 men in the box but with 5-3 you can place your line backers behind the down linemen and not show the blitz as Newport does already. You can sit there and catch them in the blitz every time. All you have to do is make your quarterback delay the hike to give the linemen an opportunity to pick it up. But with the 5-3 you now have a nose man to create some problems for the center too. As far as Newport's O-line -- you're right - they miss so many blocks I would hate to be their QB. As I have said before - the QB needs to start scanning the field more but then again he doesn't get much time to do so. I don't know what else they can do at this point - but I guess we will have to wait and see as each game comes.

No. The vast majority of kids from the Newport Public Schools go all the way through. The number of kids going to the private school in Newport dwindled so badly that they combined the elementary and Jr. Highs with the Catholic Schools from Newport, Bellevue, and Dayton.

ThatsPat you are right most of these young men have been very competive there hole life. The coachs at Newport have a lot of talent and those young men have proven they are winners and the fans,parents expect Newport to field a competive team. The season has just started Newport has time to get it right but only time will tell. Good luck Newport put this game behind you and come out and play hard next week.

You know they may still have a good team even though they got beat, Whitley may have had something to do with them looking so bad. BUT it did not appear that they ever made any adjustments to what Whitley was doing. Also I thought that Whiltey was way more aggressive than the Wildcats, and physically beat them down early in the game.
