This puts the KHSAA in a precarious place, either do away with the transfer rule all together or make it mandatory no matter what the reason, you sit out a year, no appeals, no questions asked everyone plays on an even plane. Because of what high school basketball has become of because of college recruiting pressures and AAU traveling teams and the blue chip and elite camps, young men and women are getting some good and some not so good advice from people who are not family and school officials. These kids from smaller schools or rural areas are being told to go to bigger schools that are historically state contenders year in and year out to get your name out there, get a chance to win a championship or a Mr. Basketball and also keep playing with some of your summer team friends. This is a problem that is going to increase if something isn't done one way or the other. Personally I favor sitting out a year, like the NCAA, but if the KHSAA rules would do away with the transfer rule all together so be it. You would have parents transfereing their kids because little Jimmy doesn't like the coach, or doesn't get to play as much or whatever reasons that have been listed on here a hundred times over.

 

Keep in mind before you ask for a flat, you must sit out rule, that the KHSAA four year (8 semester) rule still sits there in force. So in college, if I sit out a year, it isn't catastrophic as I get that year back later. I have five, and sometimes six years in which to possibly play four. The way the schools have the four year rule (Bylaw 4) written, if you are ineligible, you can't get that year back. So its a different scenario.

 

Also keep one thing in mind. If every kid was ineligible whose mother, dad or other relative said something that he shouldn't have publicly, would anyone be eligible? Apparently there were a lot more facts available to both the hearing officer and the board than most of us will ever know. For one, I am just glad that the media can move on to something else.

I'm not saying that Euton and Jackson aren't legitimate transfers, but we are on a slippery slope here because everyone who wants a transfer feels it is for a legitimate reason in their(parents & player) own minds regardless of what the KHSAA says and when was the last time the KHSAA ruled against a top player in the state or program in the state transfering. They've investigated, held meetings, ect. and in the end the transfer holds up and the kids get to play and the school benefits from having the better player on their team. This situation would have best been served if the parents had kept their mouths closed to the press and public and just transfered and let ther KHSAA make their rulings and let all of us on the web sites express our opinoins. Like I said before, the problem is only going to get worse as time goes by and smaller or less successfull schools that lose really good players on regular basis year in and year out will demand that the KHSAA go to a mandatory sit-out a year rule.

 

 

It doesn't matter whether the parents feel it is a legitimate transfer; its whether the KHSAA feels it was legit. I fully understand the slippery slope argument. But these transfers in my opinion don't push the KHSAA any further down that slope than any other transfer that was approved for reasons similar to these two cases.

SCHS also got a nice freshman transfer (Ivey) from the Western Hills district. Seems like a lot of basketball transfers for one school.

Way to go KHSAA! I guess if Michael Vick was moving to the Central Kentucky area they would probably allow him to play at Scott County too, if he played basketball. Is there anyone else out there that would like to join the Cardinals? It would be so sweet for someone other than Scott County to win the 11th region. Maybe the KHSAA is allowing all the transfers because the Scott County folks did all the complaining about the realignment when they were moved from the 8th Region to the 11th. They may have made some sort of agreement in the fine print.

The majority of the people on this board will think I'm crazy for saying this, but there will be some teams in the 11th that will have a good chance of beating Scott County with their unprecedented number of transfers. Who would have predicted that Madison Central would have beaten their powerhouse team 3 years ago in the region finals.

 

Also, contrary to popular belief, there are other schools that have quality coaches, facilities and community support.

 

Should be a fun season in the 11th!!!!

Shame. Shame. Every kid that has been ruled ineligible over the past 10 years due to the abitrary decisions of the KHSAA should have recourse. I am glad for the kids in the decision but the KHSAA is in need of major overhaul. The quicker they restucture and inject some new blood into the organization the better they will be. As a long time supporter of the organization I will spend my resources elsewhere until they can clean house!

I think it's truly funny that there are those who are astonished at this ruling. As a body, the KHSAA found that by fact that both boys met the criteria laid out in the bylaws. What is so "arbitrary" about that? It's not like they flipped a coin, drew straws, or spun the bottle.

I was referring to the several other rulings statewide over the past 5 years where a family didn't have the resources or capacity to fight the original rulings that had the same circumstances as this case and those kids did not play. As for the arbitray issue, I have to disagree. I think the entire process and rules lead to arbitrary decisions. There has to be consequences with every move we make in our lives and moving from district to district should have the same consequences. I know it is harsh to the minority but the majority is what the rules should protect. I also think had the KHSAA not shown in their past histories that they can be arbitrary in the way they interpret their own rules that this may or may not have been an issue. I still don't think this is an Euton,Jackson, Flannery issue as much as it is a KHSAA issue and their inability to lead and manage themselves. Also, if they did spin the bottle or flip the coin there are several kids in the state that would have at least had a 50/50 chance!!!!

And it still remains in this case, that by meeting the rules in place, that they met the criteria set forth in the bylaws. I don't see how arbitrary in this case could possibly apply. I have no knowledge about former cases, no insight as to why they were ruled one way or another. I can't and won't argue that those processes may have been flawed, but for this thread, and for this case, they ruled by what was written in black and white.

The simple issue with many is that they all went to a school who already is a basketball power and made them immediately more of a power. Whether most would admit it or not, had they gone elsewhere, there wouldn't be nearly as much angst toward this decision, IMO.

 

I'll end with this. What else do you want folks to do? They know the criteria needed to be met when transferring. And when they meet it, somehow things aren't kosher. I suppose I can't grasp that logic.

I don't think Vick would be eligable, but his kids would be. And there would be somebody complaining that the home grown kids are suffering.

I guess you didn't read Mr. Eutons comments that clearly said it was for athletic purposes which is against the policies of the KHSAA. But then again on that day while wearing a blue shirt, standing on one leg in the Toyota parking lot and reading a Shakespeare novel it was OK. They should have told all the other kids that have been ruled ineligible that this was the process?????? I know of three young athletes, 2 boys and 1 girl that had similiar situations that lost a year of playing time in our region alone. If we are going to stand on the rules and rules alone then Flannery and Jackson are eligible but based on public comments made by the other family he should be ineligible.

Scott County should be heavy favorites in the 11th, however on any given night things happen. The Madison Central team you speak about beat a Scott County team full of Sophmores.With a year of seasoning they showed how good they were by winning the State championship and going undefeated in-state. Scott County is the only team this year that has kept there two best players and gotten better players by transfer. There will be alot of people to cheer against Scott County, it will be very interesting to see how the players respond. I believe they will respond very well and be a very good team. If you look at player rankings Scott County has the #2 ranked Senior, #1-3 Juniors, and the #1 and #4 ranked Freshman. No team in the state can come close to that firepower. But as they say on any given night.
