August 27, 200818 yr I do not want to discount the work done by any local minister, but IMO, the preception of the Pope is enhanced due to the fact that he is someone who has been a long time member of the clergy, and is appointed by his peers to the positon and is usually also well know and respected worldwide prior to his becoming the Pope. As far as the bolded, so does Fred Phelps congregation. Just something to think about. I do not believet that all ministers are on the same level, just as I do not believe that all priests are on the same level. On your first paragraph, my minister was appointed by his peers, has been doing this for a good period of time even though he is still young and I don't think worldwide stature has diddly to do with God's word. God didn't choose world renowned men or political or cultural leaders with the 12 apostles. As far as your Fred Phelps remark, he was chosen to lead his congregation, I would assume, in very simiilar manners that my minister and the Pope was chosen minus the big stovepipe thing.
August 27, 200818 yr So did the Holy Spirit retire? I think certain manifestations of the Holy Spirit are not present in today's world. They may be needed later but I do not think that today people can heal using the Holy Spirit as they did in Jesus' day.
August 27, 200818 yr hmmmm..... Actually I have had mixed relationships with the inordinate number of them I have talked to. I have known a few that were actually verywilling to listen and understand my side things (being Catholic and all). A former student of the SBTS is actually a good friend of mine, and understands my problem with many of those I encounter there as they drove her nuts too. Something about those "storm troopers" as you aptly called them, just never sits well with me. When someone seems so zealous into something or so "perfect" with something it just comes across as trying too hard and false and that is the vibe I get with many of the ones that I have dealt with. They probably just need to grow up, but that's just my experience with them. She must be an older graduate. Al Mohler has done everything he can to discourage women from obtaining a theologial education and ministry calling.
August 27, 200818 yr She must be an older graduate. Al Mohler has done everything he can to discourage women from obtaining a theologial education and ministry calling. She isn't much older than me, but she also didn't graduate. She was too disgusted with them.
August 27, 200818 yr She must be an older graduate. Al Mohler has done everything he can to discourage women from obtaining a theologial education and ministry calling. Not to take this thread off topic, but Al Mohler, as the head of STBS is much more vocal than Dr. Hunt, who's the President of the SBC. Why is that?
August 27, 200818 yr Not to take this thread off topic, but Al Mohler, as the head of STBS is much more vocal than Dr. Hunt, who's the President of the SBC. Why is that? Because Al has always been about Al. He loves the light and has an agent that books him on all the talk shows. Hunt is a pastor who also likes the light but he is more known and vocal among pastoral peers than public posturing podiums. (How's that for allitiration?) :thumb:
August 27, 200818 yr Dr. Mohler is local and has a nation wide radio program. you can call his office or email him, he returns emails better than phone calls, but I get that from everyone I call. Give me y'alls numbers....:ylsuper:

Read Al's blog today, his selection makes clear that he believes he carries the torch somewhat for those of us who believe that biblical principle is dying. Simply to dismiss that as pandering is, I think, grossly simplistic.

Simply to dismiss that as pandering is, I think, grossly simplistic. Did you know Al when he supported the Biblical principle that God could call and ordain women as ministers and deacons or did you only know him after he changed his mind and the winds of SBC change blew by the late 80's? Did you know Al when he embraced the faculty of SBTS as his own and then later castigated many of the same as liberal heretics? I did.
August 28, 200818 yr I used to work with several SBTS students when I worked at Starbucks. One in particular was drawn to SBTS because of Dr. Mohler's current views. JT was very rigid and very unbending when I first met him. He was convinced that my soul was in deep danger because I was Catholic, a single mom and that I had harmed my kids over their lives due to the divorce. But, over the years as we spent a lot of evenings scrubbing floors and cleaning equipment as the primary closers in that store, we discussed religion a lot. He began asking many of the same questions I've answered here. Over time, he began to be more tolerant, but was very torn because he felt his developing tolerance was conflicting with what Dr. Mohler was speaking of. Eventually, Dr. Mohler released his sermon (lecture) basically condemning couples who chose not to have children, or chose not to have biological children, but adopt. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for JT. He wrote a long letter to the editor regarding that one. JT finished his studies at SBTS, and went into the field in which he obtained his Masters. He values the excellent education he received at SBTS, but he's much less enamored with Dr. Mohler. Dr. Mohler's address of issues has also caused me much distress within my own family. My uncle is a SB preacher, who obviously studied at SBTS. My aunt (his wife) and he adhere very strictly to the priciples imparted by Dr. Mohler. I admire them their strength of faith and conviction. However, it has caused some very hurtful disagreements between me (the lone remaining practicing Catholic in my family, not including my kids who don't participate in these discussions), and them, as I believe as strongly in my Catholic faith. I find Dr. Mohler to be divisive, to say the least.
August 28, 200818 yr And he is a Human, not perfect and Hatz people grow. Also just because Dr. Mohler says so we still have the freewill. I don't agree with everything he says/Billy Graham/Pope/Joel Osteen/My preacher/My Sunday School teacher.
August 28, 200818 yr I find Dr. Mohler to be divisive, to say the least. I think a lot of "religious leaders" are divisive.
August 29, 200818 yr How do these verses tell us the Bible is complete? How are we to know what should and should not be in the Bible? Faith. And plus the prophets of the OT and the apostles in the NT backed up their testimony with miracles. Anybody can just say God told them something, how do we know if they are telling the truth if they don't back it up with signs and wonders? The pope is not making the blind see, the lame walk, raising the dead, etc. Just as ladies b-ball coach said certain aspects of the Holy Spirit are not nessecary today. The bible tells us all we need to know.
