August 24, 200818 yr I have a few questions/comments. 1. People who disregard the authority of the Pope- do they disregard the authority of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekial, Elijah, etc.? According to many, their relationship with Jesus does not need a go-between. They can foster their relationship without one another. 2. People like to rely solely on the Bible. A lot of people rely heavily on the words of Paul in his various letters to different Christian communities. Why is this valid, if you can have a relationship with Jesus without a go between? Furthermore, if Paul's words are divinely inspired (which I do agree with) why can't the words of the Pope be divinely inspired as well? Because they are not in a book that was assembled and carefully selected by early Catholics? The Priest at Mass put it greatly today. He said when Pope John Paul I became Pope, he went to the school where he was and handed out pictures of him. He asked the 1st graders if they knew who the Pope was and what he did. A little boy in the back row (who turned out to be from a Southern Baptist family) answered "The Pope is the head preacher in the world". Does anyone take argument with that idea? Thoughts/comments on my very unorganized array of thoughts/comments?

I think the problem that Protestants seem to have is that it appears that the Pope is worshipped. There appears to be a lot of resources that are wasted in the Catholic Church through extravagent wardrobes and buildings all for the sake of making the Pope to seem different than the preacher at 1st Christian Church on the corner that drives a 1993 Firebird.
August 24, 200818 yr 1.Does it really matter? No 2.Will this thread bring any new idea, or perhaps a resolution to the table....No. Any open conversation between Christians is a good conversation.
August 24, 200818 yr Any open conversation between Christians is a good conversation. Sometimes I feel these Holy War threads on BGP, do more damage than good for your religion.
August 24, 200818 yr Sometimes I feel these Holy War threads on BGP, do more damage than good for your religion. For those who want to take that view going into it, you are probably right. I have learned alot and am more appreciative of the Catholic denomination of Christianity than I was before I became a member of BGP. Does not mean I agree with all they do. Just like I don't agree with things that other denominations do. But I am more appreciative of things they do to forward Christ's word in this world.
August 24, 200818 yr Author Sometimes I feel these Holy War threads on BGP, do more damage than good for your religion. LBBC, and I hope everyone else, knows that I am not attacking them. I will be honest- sometimes I think to myself "How can Protestants be so stupid", but I realize that often times, those Protestants are the most rock-solid people out there- people who wear their beliefs on the outside, and aren't afraid to stand up for them. I like fostering discussion as LBBC said. 1. Aren't all those guys OT. Things changed when Jesus came. 2. Paul's words were aimed at what the Church should be. I knew you'd say that. Paul, of course, is NT and his words are sacred. Why can't the Pope be speaking on behalf of God as well? Because his words are not in a book? 2. The Pope is the leader of Christ's Church. His words are similar. Let me put it this way- if Paul was around today, would his teachings be rejected because they are not physically in the Bible?
August 24, 200818 yr From a complete outsider looking in...It seems as if the Protestants embody more of what I can interpret from the Bible as Christ's Church(if he even wanted one).

To me, he is no different than the minister at my local church.
August 25, 200818 yr Well there is a big one that we will not agree on. To me, he is no different than the minister at my local church. You don't view the pope as any different than a local minister? Are you serious?
August 25, 200818 yr You don't view the pope as any different than a local minister? Are you serious? Why should he?
August 25, 200818 yr ^Because he's the head of the church. Not the church I went too, I am sure not LBBC's church.
August 25, 200818 yr You cannot question God and his word. You cannot play word games, Paul isn't here and wrote 13 books. And there is no mention of a Pope. The Pope said a few months ago saying something about churches that are not Catholic are False churches. He has the right to say what he wants, but needs to say it in his church, not in public. I also have the same right, but I willnot call other religions false. I've came a long way, and if you are a member of a false religion "in my eyes," well its better than no religion at all. The Pope has been several different men through the years. And they got old and died just like the Old testament prophets did that were mentioned earlier. These prophets were used by God to be writers for his word. 2nd Timothy 3:16. If the Bible would mention the Pope and this is not Pter then I wouldn't feel this way. Remeber, I said "in my eyes" and I only speak for myself and no one else on this subject.
August 25, 200818 yr Author Well there is a big one that we will not agree on. To me, he is no different than the minister at my local church. Is the minister at your local church strictly a minister? Does he have another job? Did he attend schooling for 5-7 years after college to more fully understand the Word of God? Has he been preaching the Word of God for decades and conversing with similarly-educated men for that long? I am not saying that your minister holds no value, just to say that there is no difference.......
