Putting Our Dog Down..

Featured Replies

Sad week..

We're going to put our German Sheppard of 13 years down sometime this week. Her hips have been giving out for a few months now, we took her to Cumberland last week and when we got home she could barely walk. Our friend, a vet, came over and checked her out and said she should be fine until she started breathing heavy but she looked so bad we took her to the vet.

Her kidneys are shutting down and she is starting to suffer.

My step dad, brother, and myself said when a grave was dug we'd put her down. We all know what we have to do but none of us have the heart to dig the grave.

:cry::cry:

I'm not looking forward to this..

Dig the grave now, don't let her suffer. I also waited and put it off until the last minute. When that moment arrived and the dog was in such pain that it could not be moved, the vet was out of town. I had to do it myself.

It will be tough! I have been through it several times now...it never gets any easier. The only thing you can tell yourself is that prolonging the dogs pain is purely selfish. They will be much better off. Even still...its amazingly tough, our dogs are part of the family!!

We're also doing it ourselves..

She takes her last pain pill tonight, so we'll probably be doing it tonight..

So sorry, I don't know what I would do without my dog.

Given a choice, I prefer the vet do it. I salute you for doing what is right regardless of method.

We had to put our boxer down last fall, the same day as the UK Georgia game. He had an enlarged heart and just coughed up blood for 4 hours one morning.

I cried so hard.

Very sad, I'm going to cry like a baby..

 My heart goes out to you PMIC. I've been there done that.

Tough to hear, as pets are part of many families.

I know how tough this will be for you. My family had to put a German Sheppard of mine/ours down when the dog was 15 years old, the dog was the same age as me at the time.....my Dad had stopped and bought the dog as a new pup on his way home on the day I was born.

My brother in law was the one that actually put the dog down, no one else could do it and he certainly didn't want to either, the grave was dug by us as well. So, I can definately relate to your story.

I have lost a couple of pets in my life. I hate losing them so much, I basically refuse to get another one because you become so attached.

That sucks, I can't imagine how it will feel if I had to do that to my dog....

As soon as I saw this thread my heart sunk. I am so sorry. I will be thinking of you and your family as you go through this hard time. A personal story I have.....my parents had a 13 year old German Shepard as well. His name was Mash. The best dog you could ever ask for. He also like your German Shepard started to have hip problems, and things just kept getting worse. Well about 6 months ago they put him down. It was so sad and so hard but when you look back on the whole situation, they felt better that they did that b/c he truely was suffering. We think about him every day. Its a hard decision to make but it will be ok. Hang in there.
