My wife was watching an Oprah that she had recorded a few days ago. She told me to come watch this. Sure enough, they had found some of the poorest people in Eastern Kentucky and featured them on the show "America's Poor". I love how Eastern Kentucky is always portrayed this way to the rest of the nation. Did anyone else see this?:madman::mad::fight:

I didn't catch this but it was just about 3 months ago that CNN I believe went to Clay County and filmed the worst parts of town and interviewed only the poorest people. The Clay County mayor sent a letter back to them asking them come back and film the brand new buildings that they avoided that was right next to the older ones.

Every part of the nation has their stereotypes, just like people from Miami are all cuban and illegal. Or all people in Georgia are Southern Baptist.

Actually, Anderson Cooper from CNN was being interviewed on Oprah during this show. This is probably part of the same thing in Clay County. The parts I saw showed the poorest family ever from Hindman in Knott County and another poverty stricken family in Mousie (not sure which county that is).

People always think Kentuckians are hillbillys.

I cannot stand her and her arrogant ways, she does do good for some but has to make sure that everyone knows it is her doing it. The average income in Clay County is less than $10,000 a year. I'm not saying she wasn't especially exploitive, but lets not kid ourselves, poverty in this area is both noticeable and a problem.

I'm not trying to argue here, but why is everyone so upset? Kentucky does have a very poor population in places. Why is it that that has to be hidden? It's the truth, and we (Kentucky) have done nothing to alleviate it. Yes, a lot is on the individual, but with Kentucky's educational ranking and lack of new industry in areas where industry has left, a huge part of the blame lies squarely at all of our feet. If we don't want the stereotypes to persist, we have to work to change them.

My biggest problem is that I have been all over the Eastern half of the United States and I have seen places in EVERY state I have visited that are as bad or far worse than anything in Eastern Kentucky. Yet, the news reporters always come to Eastern Kentucky to illustrate "America's Poor".
