Obama's 'no income taxes on seniors' draws critics

Featured Replies

Everyone should pay some level of tax in my opinion. All people use some level of services that taxes provide.

Surely The One wouldn't pander to a group that traditionally has one of the highest voter turn-out percentages would he?

I have been out of the loop lately, where did the phrase "The One" come from to describe Obama?

 I forgot, Republicans never pander.

And when they do, you call them out for it. So don't be surprised when Obama gets called out for pandering to the Geritol Set (I'm not there yet, but I am at least eligible for AARP!)

 I forgot, Republicans never pander.

Do you really want a list of everyone the left panders to?

Abortionists, Tree huggers, Non-Working poor, ILLEGAL immigrants, Convicted felons, et al.

Just for the record, I do not know one single abortionist. How do you pander to tree-huggers - if you mean dems are worried about the environment, okay, illegal immigrants can't vote, and convicted felons can't either.

I would assume that pandering has to entail doing/saying something to get a vote.

There are no abortionists, there is an environmental problem, and the other two groups can't vote, so I would suggest that by definition the dems do no pandering to these groups.

The term "tree hugger" did not just appear spontaneously and I doubt that many tree huggers vote for Republicans. Environmental extremists tend to toe the Democratic Party line. Abortionists do exist as do those who assist in abortion and those who make abortion possible by providing the unborn children. Most of them vote for Democrats and Democratic candidates certainly do pander to them.

As for pandering to illegal aliens, there is a reason why Democrats have fought so hard against state laws requiring voter photo IDs. To the extent that the Democratic Party has been successful in that regard, some illegal aliens have certainly been able to vote for the party that made it possible.

So because you don't know an abortionist they don't exist. FYI there's an aspiring abortionist that has visited this very thread.

And to add to Aces post which party is it that's so intent on returning voting rights to convicted felons.

I am in favor of returning voting rights to Class D felons who have gone 10 years without committing a crime. Its good for business, which should be a conservative benchmark. That is another thread.

Also, conservatives might be interested in Obama's proposed legislation. Seniors makeup a sizeable majority of growth and income stock investors on the New York Stock Exchange. So Obama's proposal would eliminate all taxes upon their dividend, and possibly even capital gains, income. Since he probably had not considered that when he opened his yap, I'm in favor of it.

Obama is really going to test the moral fiber of this country in November. How many people's vote is for sale? Using other people's money to buy votes has been a growing problem for decades but Obama is taking the practice to an entirely new level. I wonder what the liberal Tax Policy Center has to say about this proposed cynical exploitation of tax policy for political gain?

From MSNBC and some liberal think tanks:

Obama's 'no income taxes on seniors' criticized

Some of Obama's allies in Washington think he's onto a bad idea.

"Most low- and moderate-income seniors already owe no income tax. Among seniors with incomes below $50,000 who do owe income tax, a significant number have modest incomes because they are retired but possess substantial assets," said Robert Greenstein, who heads the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank. "Given all the problems and needs the nation faces, targeting relief to this group isn't a priority."

The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, gave the idea bad grades in a recent study of the two presidential candidates' tax plans.

Seniors already get preferential treatment in the tax code. They get to claim an additional standard deduction and only a portion of their Social Security benefits are taxed. Many don't pay payroll taxes because their income is from investments rather than wages.

"The proposal would exempt comparatively well off, though not affluent, senior citizens from tax and give them a benefit not generally available to working Americans," said the Tax Policy Center paper. It "helps only those low-income seniors who currently pay income taxes. Those too poor to owe any tax — arguably those most in need — would get no benefit." -

Note that the Tax Policy Center's complaint is that senior citizens who already pay no federal income taxes would get no benefit from Obama's plan. This is a ploy often used by liberal politicians who argue in favor of tax cuts for people who pay no taxes. This probably explains how the Tax Policy Center's analysis of Obama's tax policies would result in a savings of more than $500 for people earning less than $19,000 per year.

I follow you, but I did not read the original article as suggesting that the tax proposal was in lieu of other things, only in addition to. If he wants to cut taxes on the income of affluent retirees, why would we complain about it? Help me out here.
