August 4, 200818 yr Author True. If you figure at best a team could make up a game per week, then the Reds would still be in the wild card race. But let's not kid ourselves into thinking they would be making a run. The Rockies and Nationals series put a fork in any hopes of that. Very disappointing season.
August 4, 200818 yr And without him they are a much worse team. Maybe it wasn't Jr hitting in the 3 hole that was the problem.:sssh: But that begs the question...would you rather be decent and old, with no youngsters playing, and with no trip to the playoffs? Or would you rather be less than decent, building and young, with no trip to the playoffs?
August 4, 200818 yr Author I was going to post this too lbbc. Say what you want, but it's been basically 25 games without Griff in the 3 slot, and the team is pathetic. This team just doesn't have a #3 hitter on it, plain and simple. I agree. From what they did have, Jr seemed to be the best option.

August 4, 200818 yr The bottom line is that the Reds are terrible this season and I'm not sure it matters whose batting where. Aren't they in last place in their division?
August 4, 200818 yr Out of all the power hitters in the league Dunn ranks near the bottom for at bats with runs in scoring position. The reason why? Hummmmmm.... He also ranks ahead of the Almighty Hamilton with % of time the runners score.
August 4, 200818 yr So wins are a meaningless stat? Wins? No. Wins attibuted to a player who has had a bad year simply because he's in the lineup? Absolutely meaningless. In July the Reds had a 4-game win streak with JR batting 3/13 in the 3 hole. You think 3/13 is why the Reds had a win streak? Exactly.
August 4, 200818 yr I agree. From what they did have, Jr seemed to be the best option. How in the world would we know that JR was the best option when he rarely didn't bat in the 3 hole? Your support is admirable. Your supporting evidence is weak and illogical.

You guys also have no evidence that says he isn't the best option, but you all make assumptions that others would do better, why can't we do the same?
August 4, 200818 yr Thought it was interesting that so many people clamored for him to be out of the 3 hole but the wins show that the Reds did best when he was there. That may be. And for those enamored by the sub .500 seasons, then I can see your point. For those of us who are not satisfied by mediocrity, well I think we realize that the retooling of this club is necessary to have any hope of competing at all. Unloading JR was a step in that direction. What happens the rest of this season is moot.
August 4, 200818 yr .500 ball is evidence enough he isn't a #3 hitter IMO. So it's all on whoever hits #3?
August 4, 200818 yr So it's all on whoever hits #3? No but if he is hitting #3 on your team at this point in his career you team will be no better than .500 just like it has been the last 4 years with him in that spot.
