July 30, 200818 yr Someone stole my wife's debit card number. Thus far we've financed ring tones, cell phone minutes and accessories. They even had the security code on the back so they must've jacked it from somewhere online. They only hit us up for small charges but they made a bunch within a two day period. Needless to say, I'm not a happy camper. I've since canceled the card and may have to cancel that checking account. We've sent emails and made phone calls to the companies and they've been helpful, for the part. But, what a pain in the rear end... Has this happened to anyone else?

Happened to my sister's best friend. Was jacked at a Mexican restaurant in Grayson called Toro Loco. Don't go there and pay with anything but cash, amigo! Good luck Sticky!
July 30, 200818 yr Talk about a bummer! Hey Im not in the insurance business so I am certainly not trying to sell you anything but look into identity theft insurance. Fairly cheap and if it were to happen to you again somehow, they take care of all of that nonsense for you!
July 30, 200818 yr While not technically the same thing, my parents had their credit card number stolen a couple years ago, and the dude (or dudette) ran up over $5,000 worth of charges in a week. The credit card company took care of everything and they didn't have to do anything so it worked out pretty well.
July 30, 200818 yr Yes, It happened to both my card, and my wife's card earlier this year. I'm real paranoid about that kind of stuff, so I check my bank statement online everyday. When I noticed a suspicious charge coming thru, I called my bank immediately and they canceled the card. The thiefs usually try small amounts at first to make sure the card is working, and then they move up to more expensive items.

Just tried to call a company on the list the bank gave me, doesn't seem like they exist...:fight::fight:

Wife had her purse stolen, twice from a locked vehicle. Had to cancel, many things and change locks, accounts, etc. Prosecute the scum.

Has your bank credited the money back to your account yet?
July 30, 200818 yr Doesn't a debit card with the Mastercard or Visa logo offer some of the same protections as a credit card? I'm not sure why you would have to close your checking account. The bank should be able to disassociate the card from the account and put a stop on any future purchases. The reason thieves go small at first is to see if the card has been reported stolen. Then they go for the big purchases.
July 30, 200818 yr Author You shouldn't be liable for any of those charges. Has your bank credited the money back to your account yet? They will if we dispute the charges. Not a big deal, just need to dispute the charges with the company, although this charge with the bogus company may be a problem.

They said, to be safe, just cancel the entire checking account.
