Weren't there more than a few people who said that Eli Manning played much much better and with more confidence once Shockey got hurt and was out of the way?

Personally, I think he is terribly overrated.

 

Eli played much better after Shockey went down. If it was because Shockey went down, we'll never really know.

And I can understand why THAT situation would make someone not like him. I can, I promise. But I've never read or seen an interview where Eli blamed poor play on other teammates. As far as I'm concerned that is completely untrue.

 

I know, I was just stating that, that may be the reason people feel he may have came into the league expecting automatic respect. As for the rest of what you said...I have never heard him say anything of the sort either.

I like this trade for both teams. Assuming Shockey stays healthy, I think he'll be a great fit in the Saints offense. I expect Payton to utilize him in a way that is more satisfying to Shockey. It also gives them a nice trio of weapons in the passing game with Colston at WR, Shockey at TE and Bush out of the backfield. If Deuce can come back and give them a solid presence as a between the tackles back.

 

There are several "ifs"...if McAllister bounces back strong, if Shockey meshes with Brees and the offense, if Bush can hit his stride and live up to the hype...

 

...if it all comes together, this could be the best offense in the league.

 

As for the Giants, I think unloading Shockey was the right move. They aren't going to miss him and they get two picks in the 2009 draft (2nd and 5th rounder). Any time you can get that kind of value out of a guy who you may be better off without is a no-brainer.

If that is true then it's probably good that he is gone. The Giants have a few guys with talent at tight end but no one nearly as good as Shockey is now. Kevin Boss is loaded with potential and look out for a guy named Darcy Johnson. He could get some serious PT at TE for the G-Men.

Shockey had to go, and if there's a surprise it's only that it took the Giants this long to figure it out. I mean, three months earlier the Giants seemed this close to pulling the trigger, then backed off -- with a three-way deal involving Miami and New Orleans reportedly considered.

 

Since then, nothing changed except Shockey's attitude. It was worse, and if you don't believe me you weren't at the team's June minicamp. Shockey couldn't practice because he was recovering from leg and ankle injuries, and I understand that. But when coach Tom Coughlin was asked why Shockey wasn't on the field with other injured players he couldn't -- or wouldn't -- produce an answer.

I heard that the Dolphins wouldn't let the Giants talk to Jason Taylor. The Giants were interested in shipping Shockey to New Orleans. New Orleans would ship 2 picks to Miami and Miami would send Taylor to the Giants.

Interesting tidbits I just heard in an interview with Paul Dottino.

 

*Shockey WANTED to be on the sidelines in the Super bowl. He was advised by doctors to not even go, but he went anyways. The team told him not to be on the sidelines and this made him furious.

 

*Shockey was upset that the Giants took a call earlier in the off season from the Saints. He didn't want them to listen to trade offers.

 

*Shockey thought the Giants leaked information about a potential trade, when in fact, it was the Saints who did so. He was upset with the Giants about this.

 

*The Giants did not want to trade Shockey. They thought he would eventually get over it and be happy in New York. When they realized that was not going to happen, Jerry Reese pulled the trigger and dealt him.

 

Also just found out that it's possible the Giants will get a first round pick instead of a 2nd and a 5th. The first rounder would come in 2010.

 

 

Tom Rock at Newsday, uncovered an interesting fact concerning the Jeremy Shockey trade and how if things fall a certain way, the giants could receive a first round pick next year instead of New Orleans' second rounder. According to T-Rock's report, the Jets are scheduled to receive the Saints' second-round pick if LB Jonathan Vilma plays 85%of the defensive snaps and the Saints sign him to a new deal by the end of the season.

 

Now if that were to happen -- and I'd be surprised if it does -- the Giants would then receive a first-round pick in 2010 instead of a second and fifth in 2009.

I'd be happy if I were you. Shockey is definitely an above average TE, but he's not a game changer. He can be replaced, thus he was expendable. On top of that, they got excellent value out of him, IMO. If Jerry Reese keeps drafting like he did last year, those two picks will help the team more than Shockey in the long run.

 

I don't think the Giants will miss him. And, I think he'll really help the Saints. It was a win-win.
