JV Players to basketball

Featured Replies

Dear Varsity Basketball Coaches,

Please revise your basketball practices and schedules so that it will not interfere with football. We want all the kids to be able to participate in all football activities as well as all basketball activities. I realize this may hurt your sport somewhat, but it would be better for the two kids that play both sports. I also know it would be just as easy for football to modify it's schedule, but I would prefer you change your schedule, since you have summer basketball leagues and AAU leagues that run most of the year. Thank your for you help in this matter in advance.

Turd meet punch bowl.

You can't do everything and miss nothing.

What if he's not a JV basketball player, what if he's a varsity starter. What's the big deal of letting one, maybe two kids go to basketball. It's not going to hurt the football team at all, but it sure hurts the basketball team. Why punish the kids, all it does is makes the kid have to make a decision on what sport he wants to play.

In many cases the JV kid is also a 3rd maybe 4th stringer on offense and maybe a 2nd or 3rd stringer on defense. If you let him go while the season is still going and you lose two or three guys in a game or that week in practice(and this does happen!!!) then you need that kid to be there for his team. Bottom line, it's a contact sport and you never know when you need a young kid to step in when he's needed.

It doesn't hurt the kid to keep him until football season ends (in many programs there is not that much overlap-state champs aside), how many times does the basketball team do the same to the spring sports and also move all the 8th graders up to watch and maybe see 2-3 minutes of clock on the freshman level? This fence swings both ways!

Are you serious?

No way. Why would you let them go play basketball during football season? Why would they want to leave the team? The end of football season is the best anyways, it's getting to be crunch time, win or go home, and sure beats 2 a days in the heat. At small schools, as previously stated, these kids are usually just a starters ankle sprain away from being in on friday nights. To me that would be telling the players that they are bigger than the whole team concept.

It's not football season anymore, the JV season is over. What's so difficult to understand here. The sophomore has never played a varsity down and he certainly won't during the playoffs. I don't understand the problem. Let him go play basketball if he wants to.

From a long time basketball guy, I still believe you teach kids to finish what they start........it's called commitment/responsibility. Sure, all BB coaches want their "guys" early, but it's simply a fact of sports (particularly in KY high schools) that there may be an overlap. Plan you season and workouts accordingly, and if your school's Football season runs long because they were fortunate enough to make the playoffs, congratulate them, don't criticize them. Missing a basketball game or two early on GENERALLY will not impact your entire basketball season of 23+ games. JMO

I don't understand why you think that the JV player is not part of the varsity team. It doesn't matter if there is a chance for him to play or not.

What worries me the most is if you have a child that wishes to quit and you supporting him. :scared:

You either are with the team or your not. Just because your not playing one year doesnt mean you cant learn about the game and mature mentally. What about injuries? Just because you havent contributed doesnt mean that you cant if the situation calls for it. J.V. or not once your on the team, your on it till the WHOLE season is ocer

Most JV players fill a role on the scout team; to help prepare the varsity kids.

So I guess the JV players in basketball that do not play varsity should (that play baseball) go to baseball after the JV season is over and not be part of the district tournament......

They do, if you don't dress varsity your season is over after your last JV game.

I guess NKU. your team and high school has a lot more students and players than the rest of us.

Let it go!!!!!!! You're not going to win this battle on here. Like most on here we feel it VERY IMPORTANT that you finish with YOUR TEAM!! They have pratice all summer together, did 7 on 7 's together, did drills together, did punishment sprints together, and dressed for games together, celebrated victories together and cried at losses together. This includes Seniors, Juniors, Sophmores, and Freshman players. Do you understand why everyone doesn't see it your way or your son's way now? Start together, End together. That's football in a nut shell. If you have such a problem with it just let him play basketball. He'll have all football season to get ready then.

It's not a battle it's a discussion. Why does the basketball and baseball teams need to be flexable but the football teams do not? There were kids going to football practice during the day and playing in the 9th region baseball tournament at night. Tell me that makes sense.
