July 1, 200818 yr Tyson Gay is da man right now. Wind aided or not, ... he was smokin in the 100m finals! I'm glad you brought this guy up. I was flipping through the channels and happened to see where he broke a record but that it wouldn't count because it was wind aided. This makes no sense to me. They don't discount home runs in baseball because they may have been wind aided. I never really knew they did this in track. Is it like this at every level (high school and college) ? Or just the Olympic level ? Why not just have the events inside ?
July 2, 200818 yr Author 15,000 meter race? I am pretty sure the cut off is 10,000 meters. The middle distance (800 Meters) and distance races have been great so far. Seeing former St. Xavier star Bobby Curtis in the 5000 late last night was worth the lost sleep. Sorry it was late, meant to put 1,500, started off at 5,000 though and didn't even notice.
July 2, 200818 yr Do they no not run a 4 x 200 relay? Nope ... Even in a lot of states ... the boys don't run it in high school. In college ... they usually run the 4 x 100, 4 x 400 and the Distance Medley (800, 400, 1200, 1600). At some meets ... they may throw things in ... but internationally ... they keep relays to a minimum--which is a shame.

I know they do it when looking at records, anything that could be ocnsidered a US, or World record. I think even for college athlete's though I'm not positive. I do know for sure though that US Championships, World Championships, and the Olympics will all not count it if it's wind aided. I believe anything over 4.5 mph tail wind is considered to be wind aided.

There also used to be a Sprint Medley when I was in high school...I believe that it was (100,200,300,400). Is that still there?

I do know for sure though that US Championships, World Championships, and the Olympics will all not count it if it's wind aided. I believe anything over 4.5 mph tail wind is considered to be wind aided. Actually it is over 2.0 mph .... For instance .. the wind-aided mark that Tyson Gay ran the other night actually equates to 9.86 (as opposed to the record of 9.68). I think that there is some noise in those correlations ... simply because he dropped a 9.72 in the semi-final rounds. Also, any time a record is set ... it must have a measured wind reading (which they do all the way down to the high school level--and probably AAU/USATF meets for youngsters). If there isn't anyone there to actually measure the wind ... it won't count as a record.
July 2, 200818 yr There also used to be a Sprint Medley when I was in high school...I believe that it was (100,200,300,400). Is that still there? The sprint medley that is run in high school is usually 100, 100, 200, 400 (keep in mind--the distances are usually going to correlate to full laps--and 100/100/200/400 = 2 laps on a regulation track). Your example would would = 2.5 laps on the track. Also, the distance medley is only a "true" event for the college indoor championships. They run it outdoors at times (Penn Relays for instance), but it isn't part of the championships. The higher the level of track ... the fewer relays .... simply because it is hard to get the sprinters and distance runners to add another series of races to their meet when they already have to go through rounds or they are facing tough compeition. At the highest level--sprinters are leaning more towards being event specialists. You may see some guys double in the 100/200. Or ... 400 runners enter 200's at times for sharpening. The distance runners on the other hand .... usually run more races at different distances. Also--at the highest level--runners who run distances don't just have great lungs/endurance .. but their footspeed is much faster than the average person realizes. A guy like Alan Webb (who I am not a big fan of--sorry ... I just hate using him for example), ran 47 and some change for the 400--which is pretty fast. Now, he holds the American mile record. It is a shame that the USATF doesn't do more to promote track and field .... as this thread displays .. there is a lot of interest--especially now ... a lot of the races are flat out inspiring.
July 2, 200818 yr I ran on our varsity track team my freshmen year. Ran the 800 and 400 and was actually pretty good for a freshmen. Ever since I have been pretty interested in the sport. That spring sure got me in good shape for soccer that fall.

July 4, 200818 yr Seeing the three guys from Oregon qualify for the 800 meters, with the third-place guy diving at the line, was pretty cool.
July 5, 200818 yr Cory Chitwood has qualified for the finals tonight in the backstroke. Cory finished 7th overall. I'd expect we'll see him again in 4 years with a much better chance of making the Olympic team.
