June 28, 200818 yr http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/ John McCain directed his trademark straight talk toward a former president, flatly calling Jimmy Carter a "lousy" commander in chief. The Arizona senator has long attempted to portray Barack Obama's policies as in the mold of Carter's, though the Republican has previously held back criticizing Carter so directly. But in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun published Friday, McCain was decidedly more blunt than he has been in the past. McCain, who is a proponent of nuclear reprocessing, was asked why he thought Carter was against the process when he was president. "Yes, because Carter was a lousy president," McCain quipped. "This is the same guy who kissed Brezhnev."
June 28, 200818 yr I greatly respect and admire Jimmy Carter for his moral values and being a strong Christian. I respect him for that and him never losing site of it. I do have to agree though that Carter was a bad president. Great man, just not a good president. JMO
June 28, 200818 yr Author What's the story here? That a U.S. presidential candidate would call another U.S. President (not running this time around if people haven't noticed) "Lousy" whether it be true or not...:thumb: Heck, even calling a presidential competitor "lousy" would seem a little out of line.
June 28, 200818 yr I think its in poor taste to call a former President "lousy" from his position. While I too think he was a lousy President, I agree with you. I think it is in poor taste.

June 28, 200818 yr McCain was just stating the obvious. Carter has ignored the tradition of showing respect to his successors and he has no right to expect to be treated any differently. Saying Carter was a lousy president was an understatement.

Saying Carter was a lousy president was an understatement. You might be right about the "tradition" part, but one of the things that I like about McCain is that he seemed above all of that type of thing. I'm not thrilled with the comment.

Saying Carter was a lousy president was an understatement. I'm not sure if that is totally true. Teddy Roosevelt was far from respectful of Taft. (His chosen successor) Didn't current Bush make a statement that indirectly criticized Clinton when he said, "I'm not going to send a missle at at tent to hit a camel in the butt." (Not saying he wasn't right just wasn't very respectful of past decisions) There are probably more but these are off the top of my head. That said, I really don't have a problem with McCain airing his views on someone's presidency. It's his view.

No former president has publicly criticized and shown less respect to successors than Jimmy Carter - at least in my lifetime. The tone and frequency of Carter's scornful jabs is inexcusable, IMO. I guess it is the pot calling the kettle black aspect of Jimmy Carter's criticism that makes it seem particularly clownish and inappropriate. I can understand Teddy Roosevelt believing himself worthy of criticizing Taft - but how can Jimmy Carter possibly believe that he is qualified to criticize anybody else's performance as president?
June 28, 200818 yr I think its in poor taste to call a former President "lousy" from his position. Not if he includes GW.
