To all of those who say that they would take the deal. Why? What's the reasoning behind pulling the trigger?

 

I fear that so many want Dunn out of Cincinnati that we'll just give him away. Surely Jocketty is not that ignorant.

 

I have mixed emotions about what we should do with the big guy; however, I do know that I'm not willing to give him away, which is what we'd be doing if this trade with the Dodgers was to actually take place.

If we think Dunn's contract vs output is a concern, why would we take a 31 year old (ie on the downside) with a huge contract?

 

If we insist on trading Dunn, I'd get some pitching prospects and use the cash elsewhere. I wouldn't take on a big contract if its not a pitcher of repute.

I'd rather take the two draft picks from letting Dunn walk at the end of the year.

 

I think that's a much better option than to take on Pierre's contract.

He's only 30 (turns 31 in Aug.). He had 196 hits last year. His OBP this year is identical to last year's. He's on pace to beat his RBI and SB totals from last year.

 

I wasn't aware he was due a raise like that, but it still is going to be well less than the Reds would likely be paying for Dunn.

Of which 164 were singles, and he only drew 33 walks. His on base percentage hasn't been above .331 since 2004 and he's got a horrible throwing arm. The Reds would be better off putting Keppinger in the leadoff role, not worrying about the stolen bases and spending the money on pitching. There's a reason Pierre's with his 3rd team in 4 seasons.

You get a leadoff hitter, a solid reliever and some cash for a guy who can't do much of anything but hit HR's.

 

I'm not down on Dunn as much as some are, but I'd still move him if I got a decent offer. But, that's just me.

But the more that watch Baker the more I question any "common sense", I am still sticking with my "wait and see" statement for now on him though. Just my opinion of him is not been getting any better.

That's my point, that's a very mediocre OBP for a leadoff hitter. It's worse than Freel's and signifigantly less than Keppinger's and Hairston's. He's also been either 1st or 2nd in the league in Caught Stealing since 2003. The stolen bases aren't worth it. He'd be another one dimensional player--that's something the Reds franchise has had too much of the last several years.

Keep Dunn.

I can Dunn being gone, for the '09 season. I've always liked but understood, what his value and limitations to the Reds are. If and when he leaves, more than likely to the AL and will probably platoon against LH.

Juan Pierre is hitting .279 with 32 SB this year.

 

He is ahead of last year's pace when he stole 64.

 

But I still wouldn't make the trade. I think we could get more than this in return for Dunn. They're pretty equal, defensively. Pierre's arm is atrocious.
