I don't see how you can discuss Christianity and not bring up the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

 

Especially when Christianity is FOUNDED on that one and ONLY principle. If you discuss Christianity, that HAS TO BE DISCUSSED!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

How can you discuss Christianity and not discuss Jesus and his sacrifice for YOU???

 

Hey, kids, during the Crusades, a bunch of English people went to the middle East to convert the infidels.

 

Why did they want to convert them, teach?

 

Well, I am not allowed to tell you that but rather that historically, they went.

 

 

Of course you talk about it, that is one of the basic tenets of Christianity but you do it in such a way so as to not TRY and convert!

 

"A preacher, of sorts, by the name of Jesus died on a cross and it is believed by Christians that it is through this action that all people have a chance at salvation." Pretty simple and not proselytizing.

 

And to the italicized that is a woefully wrong account of the Crusades. They were there to "liberate" the Holy Land, conversion was not something that was really high on their list. Unless you consider the sword, spear and crossbow to be tools of conversion used by Christianity.

Separation of church and state. simple.

Schools, at least public schools, are not to be in the business of teaching about religion. That is the position held by our society.

 

If they are teaching all religions are equal then they are taking a position on religion.

 

If they are teaching that Islam is the same as Christianity, then they are in sense, teaching that Jesus is incorrect when he says that the ONLY way to Heaven is through Him.

 

The teaching of religion is a deeply personal subject and should be handled by parents and church outreach and schools should not be involved.

 

As long as teachers are just giving a history of the religions, whats the problem? Do you also believe high school civics and history classes should be handled by parents and family memebers, after all teachers opinions are involved in these classes that are very important and I would disagree with? BTW, I think kids need to be open to other religions, beliefs and cultures. It develops character and allows the students to make an educated decision when it comes to religion, I think to many kids choose religions and beliefs soley because of they're family and where they are from!

And if you have a problem with an academic understanding of many faiths being taught equally in schools then I suggest you send your children to Christian schools.

Then do you feel "creationism" should be left out of schools completely?

In order to resolve issues related to cultural differences, and especially to live in America where there is no state religion, I feel it's important to study the history of other religions. For centuries, including those chronicled in the Old Testament, people have warred, begun socieites and implemented laws based upon religious beliefs. There is no way to separate history from religion. More people have been killed in the name of God, or Allah, or whatever, than for any other reason.

 

To teach what one's religious beliefs should be, that I can see being separated, although I personally chose to have my kids educated in our beliefs in the school setting. There's a difference between teaching Christianity as the way to believe, and teaching the history of Christianity. You cannot teach Christianity without teaching the death and resurrection of Christ. However, you can teach that these are the beliefs of Christians without teaching that that belief is the one that all should believe.

About 10 years ago Harrison County High School experimented with different types of literature classes. For example there was Sports Literature, Kentucky Literature, and Bible Literature...just to name a few. I think this was only offered a year or two...I think it is a great option (high school elective), but you can't please everyone.

I respect your convictions LBBC but I think they are YOUR convictions. That is the issue. I think I can easily teach the above and other faiths in a neutral setting. The central tenants of Christianity is Jesus is the Incarnation and out of that incarnation is the sacrifice and resurrection. The idea that you then make it personal (you) is where we would differ.

 

As has already been mentioned, your take on the Crusades is way off historically speaking as conversion was never the issue except at the point of the sword. Just as often times the Native Americans were not being converted but asked to conform. Different propositions.

I don't want the sacrifice of Christ being discussed in public school any more than I want Mohammed's asscent into heaven discussed.

The take on the Crusades was a hastily put together statement rather to be taken as literal and the way to do it.
