Church Member Gets Shocking Letter From Pastor

Featured Replies

Love to hear everyone's thoughts on this one:

Emma Hafferkamp says her friend has been distraught ever since she received the letter yesterday.

"in the letter it says she had only tithed twice last year and she needed to pay her tithes within thirty days or her name would be removed from the membership list," Haffercamp told 27NEWSFIRST.

That is ridiculous. My response would be to find a new church, because I would be highly skeptical about that church if money is a requirement for membership.

However, if it truly means everything to her, perhaps it would be worth working out a payment plan with the pastor to catch up on her tithes. :D

Seriously though, if she can still continue to attend the church, does it really matter if she is an official member? It's not like that church's roll book is the Lamb's Book of Life...or is it? :sssh::scared::D

The name of the church is Victory Time Full Gospel Church. Just in case any of you go there.

That is pretty shocking. I would find a new church immediately if this happened to me.

Thats crazy, sounds like some of those old televangelist to me, send me your money so I can pray for you.

This actually happened to my family, the priest at our church came for a visit (unexpected) one Sunday afternoon. The next thing I know my dad asked him to leave. The priest decided that my family was not tithing enough for the amount of money we made, I was in grade school when this happened and really have no idea how the priest knew our income level. This was back in the 70's.

Needless to say that was the last Sunday in that church...

I think it is a church's responsibility to challenge the congregation ACROSS THE BOARD on being committed to Christ and his expectations for us in our lives.

If I am not being committed to my family as Christ would want, I would hope a Christian friend would point that out.

If I am not being committed to my Bible Study and learning the Word, I would hope a Christian friend would point that out.

If I am all about truth and not about a balance of love as Jesus was, I would hope a Christian friend would point that out.

If I am not tithing like I should, I would hope a Christian friend would point that out.

An impersonal letter with the threat of being kicked out would not be the best way to do that.

Just curious, what do you all think about donating 10% of your income, but to multiple different places (churches, charities, religious organizations, etc.)? Is that acceptable in a Biblical sense?

Here is what I would do...

1. Ask the church where does the tithing go to?\

2. Ask to see the church budget?

3. Question every line item that does not relate to services the church provides

4. Search in my own heart about the idea of tithing and what it means to be a good stewart

5. Treat my pastor with love and kindness, but have the deacon body kick him out! (j/k)

Would be an interesting discussion...one I think may have been started before.

That seems like it would be acceptable, but I haven't actually delved into what the Bible says to verify or refute that idea.

I know the word tithe means a tenth, but the idea that we should give 10% seems to be grounded in the Old Testament. If that's the case, why do they overlook the firstfruit offering. If we in the church today are going to base our giving on the Old Testament practices of the Hebrews, why do we just pick that one practice of giving a tenth and exclude others (like the firstfruit offering)? It seems if we're going to base it on the old that not only should we give a tenth of our income, but we should also give our entire first check of the year...

Here is what I would do...

1. Ask the church where does the tithing go to?\

2. Ask to see the church budget?

Doesn't your church have business meetings monthly complete with a handout with all the revenues and expenses? It shouldn't be a secret.

As George Carlin once said:

God is all powerful, all knowing, he just can't figure out money. That's why he always needs it.

Mine does! I was just giving suggestions what that person could do:thumb:

I just gone finished working on the study of Angels to help out Larry: If people would be interested I would help in starting a thread and delving in...
