May 12, 200818 yr I do not agree with what the Pastor of this church did. However, I think that a Christian should always pay their tithes. The Bible says we are to tithe, and if we don't, we are robbing God. Pastors should always encourage their members to tithe, and it should be an issue that is taught in our Sunday School and youth programs. But, no matter what is said and done, some Christians will refuse to pay their tithes and continue in their stiffnecked ways. Does tithe necessarily mean money though? Can it not mean time? If I give 10 hours a week of my time to helping around the church is that not tithing? You can't tell me God only wants our money.

May 12, 200818 yr A "tithe" is a "tenth". And in the OT refers on how much to give to the LORD. These OT Laws are spelled out in Deuteronomy 12 6-17/14:22-28. This is not the guidelines we use under the new Law even though many Christians use this 10% now days for their offerings. But what if a wealthy family only gave the 10 when they could give so much more? The 10% is not mentioned in the NT. Give what your heart tells you to give. If the church has a special need give 50%. Etc. What is the new law you are referring to? (I have all my life pd 1/10 of all my earnings.)

I think the fact that it is money and that we have often seen it abused such as extravagant living by certain televanglists, that we loose sight of the purpose of giving. We were to bring a portion, a tenth, of all we earned beit money, food such as meat or grain, or material. This was used to take care of the actual church building, the priests or rabbis, and there staff as well as to allow care and contributions to the poor, widows, orphans and other needy. In times of drought it could stave off famine and starvation. Is today all that different? We give money to be used to pay for the building, utilities, pastor and staff. Money is then sent to missions, food pantries, schools (even colleges), relief agencies, and hospitals among other things. It is unfortunate that the Christian communities have done such a poor job of giving and distributing the surplus that we have allowed and even encouraged the government to take over for us.
May 12, 200818 yr Fan 11 Jesus Christ fullfilled thew New law and we are no longer under the Old Law of Moses. Galatians chapters 2 thru 6 covers this as does some in Hebrews. Jesus evens talks about the Old law being done away with. I'll be back...kid needs to use the PC.

Matthew 5:17 - "Think not that I have come to destroy the law or the prophets; I came not to destroy, but to fullfil." Jesus did not abolish the law. You're right that we are no longer under the old law, but some of the old law guidelines still apply, such as tithing.
May 15, 200818 yr The word "Tithe" is not found in the new testament but like I said somewhere on here Christians use that as a guideline. If I came into a lot of money and only give a tenth, I'm with-holding my offering. See the "rich young ruler".
