CovCath 8 Beechwood 7 in eight innings, or it isn't over, until it's over.

 

The good, the bad, but no box score as I left my box at home.

Things went Beechwood's way the first 4 innings, then the dreaded 5th inning killed them and Cov Cath got a few bloops to fall in and rallys back. Cov Cath put up 5 in the fifth. Beechwood down 1 in top of 7th, get a runner on base. Balk called, runner to 2nd, 2 outs. Gohs hits hard ground ball to SS, Holocher throws it wild allowing the runner to score. In the bottom of the 8th, bases loaded 2 outs. A very weakly hit ball up the middle, SS and 2nd basemen cant get it to 2nd in time, Cov Cath scores the winning run, ball game. Elliott pitched well for the first 4 innings, but his pitch count got high and he began to tire in the 5th. I think he threw over 95 pitches in just 4 2/3 innings. Can't wait to see a rematch in the future.

The good:

 

Senior Dan Neihaus who came in to relieve Nutini and pitched 5 1/3 inning of 1 run baseball in a outstanding effort to allow CovCath to come back and beat Beechwood.

 

The bat of second baseman Brandon LaFever, who had some very clutch hits.

 

This victory after being down by a score of 6-1 in the top half of the third should propel CovCath to make the players believe they have a complete team, not just stars, as a lot of role players really helped to pull this game out.

 

Junior Pat Krumme a seldom used hitter who came to bat for Isler in the bottom of eight with the base loaded had the seeing eye base hit to win the game for the Colonels.

 

The CovCath bad:

 

In fact it wasn't a pretty game. Far too many dumb plays, and the last four runs scored by Beechwood should never have scored except by dumb mistakes by the CovCath fielders.

 

It however was an exciting game, that gave the crowd attending the game there money worth.

 

It was great seeing Chris and Joy Elliott again, and I wish only the best for them and Cody.

The first three runs by Beechwood were something. Williams hits a seeing eye single down the first base line, then Slusher crushes a offering by Nutine over the left field fence near the 320 sign for a two run HR, then Gohs does the same thing in almost the exact same spot for his no doubter blast over the fence. Those three runs were earned, but the other, were given to B by some sloppy, sloppy play in the field by CovCath.

I thought Elliot looked good through 4, Cov Cath bats couldn't touch him the first two times around but it looked like he ran out of gas fast. But if you are at 94 pitches half way through the ball game you will get gassed.

 

I agree on the not so heads up plays, like the walk of at first when the CCH shortstop had the runner going home by half a baseline and almost threw it over the backstop.

 

Couldn't understand why Bob attempted the steal with 2 out, up one run and Cody at the plate, he usually doesn' t ru himself out of the inning.

It appears that CCH has the weapons offensively (for the most part). However, defensively this team is lacking ......way too many mistakes. Do we forsee any changes here? Seems to be a wide open race come regional crowing time.......

DD that's a easy call to make! The young man steals and is safe, then you have Cody up with a man on second, and any kind of hit and he scores. If he gets caught stealing (as he did) you now have Cody up with no outs in the next inning. Thought it was the correct and smart call to make.

 

CovCath did the same thing to Cody last year at Beechwood as he was unhitable in CovCath first couple of bats, but when you throw as hard as Cody does, (and BTW he hasn't thrown that much this season) you do get tired. The key was making him throw a lot of pitches something CovCath didn't do against Ryle in either game. I personally think Cody would do much better for B coming into a game in the 5th inning and holding a lead for them, then starting.

Isler had two doubles off Elliot both to the wall. The second one had an RBI with it and started the 5 run rally.

Since you are doing the asking, how about naming the changes on the "D" side of the ball, that you would like to see? Just really, really curious?

That doesnt surprise me, Myerhoff has a tendancy to say things like that when his team is down. Its sad to hear that from a coach that has been around for as long as he has.

I know a lot of people that are pro Meyerhoff and a lot of people that are anti Meyerhoff. He definitely says and does some things that rub people the wrong way. He knows baseball, but the way that he does certain things can rub you the wrong way.

Sounds like it was a great game, too bad I missed it...
