Let me start with this disclainer "I am a football fan regardless of how the district playoffs are set but watching how the first couple of rounds played out there were very few I think only like 3 where the top seeded team in the first round lost to the lower seed. Not to say that this years results will be any different but I think that it is more exciting for the kids and coaches to prepare for someone new rather than for the team that 2-3 weeks ago they drummed or 2-3 weeks ago got drummed. Two examples John Hardin in 5A and Lou. Central in 3A. Tell me those first round teams would have rather played them than someone else in the first round of the playoffs. The playoffs are watered down due to so many teams making it so what does it matter. When you have 2 really good teams in the same district it hurts them because one is never going to play a third game. Last but not least the attendance in the first 2 rounds sucked because so many took it for granted that the team that won the regular season match up was going to win the playoff game atleast in Jefferson county not sure about out in the state. Attendance should be up because in most cases the teams will not have already played and when the teams from the same district meet in the 3rd round attendance should be up because the real high school football fans team may have already been knocked out and they go see a game they otherwise would not.

See how few people from 4A District 8 travel to Bell County or Rockcastle County for their playoff games.

 

Bright idea changing it back guys when gas is $3.61/gallon and very, very few people in NE Kentucky can afford to travel 30 miles to a ballgame let alone 300+ roundtrip to Bell County or Rockcastle County!

As for all the negative comments about the KHSAA flip flopping, you need to understand that both changes came about as a result of requests by the schools. First they asked to stay in district due to travel costs. The KHSAA said okay and made the change. This year, the schools said they didn't like playing teams in the district in the first two games and wanted to go out of district and the KHSAA said okay again and switched back. There has been some flip flopping no doubt, but methinks it hasn't been the KHSAA doing it. From what I'm told the KHSAA really tries, when possible and when they don't think it will hurt athletics in Ky and when they don't think it will be unfair to the kids, to try and do what the schools want to do.

The same from what I'm told. A lot of the 6A schools (not all) wanted it the way it turned out and X and T were fine with it from what I was told.

Ha. No, going to 6 classes was the worst in my opinion. If the fans and players could read, they could easily see who they would play-not really hard to figure out. That is just a poor excuse.

 

It's hard for the average fan to figure out if it changes every year. A lot people didn't have a clue, even when the playoffs started.

It's closer for most people in the system the KHSAA changed back to. You have district 1 playing 2, 3 playing 4 etc..

Laughing or not, the biggest problem I see them (the Board) facing is that they try to respond to what the schools want in this case for the playoff pairings (AND IN THE PREVIOUS CASE WHEN THE SUPTS REQUESTED NOT TO CROSS-DISTRICT). They appear to be trying rather desperately to accomodate the membership by hitting a moving target as the schools, particularly the football coaches keep changing, and begin to resemble the "boy that cried wolf" as they keep changing what they want. Best conclusion appears to be what a former board member from Hardin County once said in a news article years ago, "they're not sure what they want, they just don't want what beat them last year."

 

Football coaches next fall, with gas prices and all, may be left to say, "we should have been more careful with what we asked for."

 

In the end, it really doesn't matter how you bracket. The big picture is you have to have a team capable and prepared to win four consecutive football games when the pressure is highest in order to get to the finals. A few coaches that are simply satisfied with or looking for an easier path of getting to the finals, will probably look for systematic changes in order to get them through those four weeks without regard for their ability to win the 5th and most important game. The real coaches, and by far, the vast majority, would tell you to just "bring em on, doesn't matter what order we play, I have to win five in a row to get the big trophy."

You won't find that because there isn't one.

Please don't lump all coaches into this bracket and don't assume "they" all wanted it. Many coaches had no say, when those with clout pushed this. NO vote was ever put to all coaches in the state.

As I understand it, and it has been explained to me, 2 things need to be clear. First, if administrators didn't pass down a mailing asking for survey responses, that's probably a local problem. As I understand, the schools were sent a survey near the first of March and it was reported that at the Board meeting, KHSAA staff said only around 40 returned. It did require sigs from Supt, Prin and Coach, that may have been some of the holdup.

 

Nevertheless, to your second point. If schools aren't happy with the representation they got on the coaches committee, they should contact those committee people. I am told that Dale Anderson at Southwestern is the head of it, if that's the case, get with him on your feelings.

 

Just because someone wasn't involved in a specific decision doesn't make it a bad decision, just gives those who didn't get involved or who weren't involved, yet another excuse.

What minority? It certainly seemed the vast majority of fans and coaches didn't like playing within the district in the first two rounds of the playoffs. I'm also certain I read a quote from Julian Tackett saying that last fall/winter.

 

Does this also mean we have true regions again?

I personally dont care wheather you cross district or not. Its just time to set something in stone, you cant keep changing year after year.
