This is also why they need wooden bats at all levels. Metal bats are for softball.

Why doesn't OH have these problems as KY does with the smaller schools and the numbers game? I understand the 8th graders moving up when the team doesn't have enough players, nothing else to do but move them up.

 

Maybe KY should adopt some of the OH rules. In basketball they have a limit on number of qts a player can play in a given night. Not a bad idea when you see some of the freshman play an entire freshman game, 1/2 of the JV/V games. This can not be too healthy.

 

 

I think it due to having larger schools, and KY have so many counties with their own schools. Ohio has many more people with fewer counties. Every Ohio school my daughter played field hockey against last season had 2500+ students.

I feel safe in saying, that many programs which have Freshman and JV teams, will have very few 8th graders, that get significant Varsity time.

 

Also, smaller schools which rely on Basketball players, will be more apt to have 8th graders participate, than those schools who don't have to wait.

Isn't there any kind of rule saying that a Player has to actually attend the High School to play for any of their teams ?

Sorry, you will never change my mind on this. HS sports are for the kids who attend the HS, and grade school sports are for the kids who attend the grade school.

 

What if the high school is in the same building with the middle schoool? Or even the same hallway for that matter?

How does this work for a kid going to a seperate middle school building from the high school he will attend, such as parochial grade school and catholic high schools? Those who favor kids playing up, are you in favor here as well, or is there a difference?

I have said it before and I will say it again, HS sports should be for HS kids. The Prom King and Queen are HS students, the year book editor is a HS student, and so on and so on. Why should a HS student sit on the bench while a eight grader plays. Yes he might be better, but then next year it will be his turn to play. Let the HS kid play and let the eight grader wait his turn. Now understand, I have no problem if you need a eight grader to fill out the team, nor do I have a problem with a Freshmen starting over a senior, but in Football and Soccer a eight grader can't even be on the same field as a HS player, so why not make that rule for all sports, unless of course you need a him/her to fill out the roster.

 

Contact your state legislator. They are the ones that created the rule allowing MS students to play at the HS level. This was not KHSAA's call.

GRC's 8th grader is Logan McQuerry this kid has some nice hands at the plate and also has a great glove at 3rd base

 

This kid is good, and will be good down the road. He had the only hit in the game vs. Harrison Co. and that was off senior lefty Branden Martin who has had some pre-season all-state hype. So if anyone thinks that an 8th grader shouldn't get playing time then your crazy. If I'm not mistaken this kid played with Harrison county in a Fall league in Lexington.

Agreed. :thumb: Only one tidbit was there was two hits in that game not just his. The other was an infield hit. Not that it matters much now though. :lol:

As long as the coach feels the kid is physically and mentally strong enough then he should do what gives the team the best option to win. If that means playing an 8th grader over juniors and seniors, then so be it. Why should gifted athletes be penalized because someone else maybe older?

Yea there was an 8th grader that played varsity for Middlesboro down in southeastern ky he was pretty good for a 13 yr old. 3 homers and a .300 batting average, he had an alright arm and glove in right field 2

LCA's Tyler Oliver played as an 8th Graders, he was all city in Lexington, the youngest that year, the second youngest was a sophomore.
