I heard that one of Williamsburg's starting pitchers this year is an 8th. grader and that he also starts in the field when he is not pitching. It is not because of small numbers because Williamsburg has upperclassmen on the bench. The kid is just good. Do any other schools play 8th. graders on varsity?

Villa started a 8th grader in right yesterday and a freshman at 2nd.

It was either last year or the year before that when i heard about an 8th grader that pitched for Harrison. I'm pretty sure they had a couple starting in the outfield that year as well.

Apollo has two 8th graders on their varsity roster this season.

Harrison has started Middle Schooler's for years. They had a 6th grader who started on one of the State Tournament teams in the 90's. He finished the High School season and then rejoined his Little League team.

I have said it before and I will say it again, HS sports should be for HS kids. The Prom King and Queen are HS students, the year book editor is a HS student, and so on and so on. Why should a HS student sit on the bench while a eight grader plays. Yes he might be better, but then next year it will be his turn to play. Let the HS kid play and let the eight grader wait his turn. Now understand, I have no problem if you need a eight grader to fill out the team, nor do I have a problem with a Freshmen starting over a senior, but in Football and Soccer a eight grader can't even be on the same field as a HS player, so why not make that rule for all sports, unless of course you need a him/her to fill out the roster.

So then why have the rule in soccer and football that they can't play and please don't say it is a size thing, there some huge eight graders out there. BTW, I believe in Ohio, HS sports are for HS kids and no eight grader can play.

The rule applies to soccer and football because the khsaa considers them contact sports.

 

If an eighth grader works all summer, fall and winter on becoming the best player they can be and a high school student does nothing to improve from the time the season ends until tryouts start do you still think the high school student should play over the younger kid? All though not always true the kid that works the hardest will usually be the best player and that is who should play regardless of grade level.

GRC starts an 8th grader... He's pretty good too.

Beechwood had 2 8 th graders letter last year .Played alot in situations and held themselves very well .One of them pitched in several games and played some 3 rd .The other was an outfielder and ran alot for the catcher .

They currently have a frosh starting at shortstop ,who is new to the team this year .

 

Old Guy ,did you notice them last year for BW ? They palyed vs Cov Cath .I'd say they blended right in .In some cases it may be an issue ,I agree .But ,some have played against top competition in the country and are not in awe when they step in vs older kids .

Because a 8th grader would get absolutely murdered in football. It's like a kid getting drafted out of high school in baseball and having to wait three years out of football. It's a totally different ball park.

I understand that completely. I was just answering the question about why the rule applies to football and soccer and not other sports. My point about playing the best kid regardless of grade was pertaining to baseball.
