I'm 28 years old, Liberal on most social issues, moderate to conservative on fiscal issues.

Registered Democrat, but have and will vote for a Republican is need be.

Pretty balanced I would say.

Notice how the gap widens as the age increases. With age comes wisdom.

Not that this is a scientific poll by any means, but even it were, the relationship between age and political leaning is statistically insignificant.

I feel I've become noticeably wiser over the years, but I have not become more conservative. But, that's just me.

According to Benjamin Disraeli (or possibly Winston Churchill): “If you are young and not liberal then you have no heart but if you are old and not conservative then you have no brain”

I thought that was Dorothy when she first met the scarecrow and tinman?

I had to chose democrat or liberal, even tho I consider myself a conservative democrat.

Me too.

I'm 50 and pretty much of a libertarian which is why I tend to agree with R's on economic issues and D's on some social issues (definitely not on welfare programs however). On military issues, I am a hawk. I'm definitely a unabashed supporter of laissez-faire capitalism and of course free trade. I'm another of what seems to be a growing trend of posters responding here of someone who started out life as somewhat of a liberal, but as I got out in the real world and had to run businesses and advise businesses, my beliefs changed (I voted for Jimmy Carter the first time he ran for Pres.) My time in the Marines also changed my beliefs. Very strong belief in personal responsibility and that no one nor the govt owes anyone anything. Strongly believe that govt has a much more limited role than it has expanded into over the years and believe that most govt intrusions into my life has been caused by politicians "trying to accomplish" something for the sole reason of bettering their chances for re-election. Strong believer in term limits for politicians and that no politician should be paid more than $1 (if you are not doing it as civic duty, you shouldn't be doing it).

I don't want to threadjack but LN how do you expect them to pay for their house mortgages, car payments, food for their children, everyday expenses?

I agree that 6 figures is probably uncalled for but I would expect that they would not have to declare for food stamps as they serve as Senator.

Have a job like the rest of us and make being a politician a part time civic duty. Too many politicians are motivated in their day to day actions by the desire to get re-elected, as being an elected federal official is the highest paying job, with the best benefits and perks, that they could ever hope to have. They'd spend a lot less time in DC meddling in my and your affairs. I'm a firm believer that the fewer laws passed, the better off you and I are. And with less time in DC, I believe it would mean fewer laws.

So, you want the President of the US and the cabinet positions to also hold down parttime jobs?????

Okay, you got me there as my post was vague. I was thinking of Congress.

And even if I meant to include the Pres and the cabinet positions, I seriously doubt that any of them would starve if they served for free.

I totally agree with you that lifetime politicians that are in it for the wrong reasons is a major problem.

And I believe what you propose is similar to what is done at the legislature level.

I could see you giving them an income level of OH, let's say teachers, :D to help them maintain their bills but $1 is a little unfair I think.

Care if I take this proposal to it's own thread?

Of course I don't care...oh never mind, you did it anyway.:D
