Any idea why? I have mixed feelings on the subject. Just wondering what the deal breaker was?

It appeared public opinion, at least at the meeting, was against the idea. The theory is it punishes the students who don't stay back. What I've noticed is that quite a few kids do their staying back in preschool or just start late.

 

I don't understand the reasoning for punishing students whose parents choose to have them repeat a grade. I think age rules are crucial, but as long as the student is not too old I don't see the problem.

The students that attend the middle school at Harlan Ind. aren't allowed to holdback and play sports the hold back year. I think they are going to change this rule this coming year were the athletes can holdback and still play.

I think NG was referring to the change in the holdback policy for next year. As for high tuition, its really not "high", because the tuition only reflects a portion of the cost of educating a student in any school system. It affects all grades, however your paranoia of the city's motives, while typical is laughable. Its this simple. It cost money to educate a child. The County's ADA compromise was to limit the folks covered at a certain number. Beyond that the City wouldn't recieve any state money for educating them. Therefore tuition is charged. I can't see how that is "choosing" students. I've heard parent complaints of "choosing" in the county system among its own schools. Really LB, your witch hunt for "smoke screens" and "advantages" is amusing at best and pathetic at worst.

 

Well we meet again papster! I was being sarcastic. I do know a little about ADA and the contract. I know all about tuition and state money. The way it would be "choosing students" would be if students were to be moved up and down the list according to the individual's positives or negatives and the impact on the school. However, we all know that Harlan wouldn't do this. Also, tuition could be waived for a certain student or students all together. Again, Harlan wouldn't do this. But if this were to be true than we have choosing students. Why does everything have to be a war with you? If I tell you how great Harlan is will you be my friend? You don't have to stretch the truth for more friendships. I am here for you big guy. Stay positive and stay the course it will all work out in the end.

To big of an age difference in the lower grades?

effect on test scores?

John and Sally might not get as much time on the field and court as before?

 

I have heard all these before but really don't have a clue as far as the reason behind Harlan's decision.

I don't know if this is dead yet. I was told the site base was locked in a 3-3 vote. That is what I was told. I am not sure though. I am not sure what they have planned if it is a 3-3 vote. They do need to make up their mind. We are, we are not, we are, we are not.

:thumb: Seriously, thanks for the support of ALL COUNTY PERFORMERS. You do a good job of promoting this players without much thanks! Anyhow we could never be rivals we walked the same halls in high school. lol

I can see both sides, but what we did was to start our boys late into kindergarten. I had no idea mine would play sports at all. Heck, I didn't. But I did this after advice from some wise teacher's who told me at 5 little boys aren't as ready for school as 5 year old girls. I followed this with my boys and academically and socially it has been very positive. Besides, I get to keep my kids for an extra year. My oldest benefitted in sports also and I think my youngest will as well. I agree with you HDE, if the parents think its best and the rules are followed, I can't see the harm.

Hey LB! Hey its devilish hard to tell when you are being sarcastic and when you are not. And I'm not in the know enough to be able to say these things absolutely never happen. I just don't think its their focus. If it does happen, it shouldn't. And no reason we can't be buds and occ. disagree is there?

I can tell you where it comes from. Some mama doesn't want her baby who is in a certain grade and pretty good at a certain sport to be suplanted by anyone who is better athletically because he is a year older. I understand this, and even once held the same opinion. However after going through an entire elementary, middle, and high school kid now, with a boy who is a year older than most of his classmates, I think this should be the parent's choice within the rules. If the complaints were purely motivated by academics, they shouldn't worry if little Johnny gets to start or not. I guess we can be buds on this issue LB. And maybe you are right too that some don't want to do it just to be different from the county. Its a bad decision in my opinion, but since I chose to start my boys late, it doesn't affect me. My advice to parents, start your kids in Kindergarten at 6. Its better for them all around.

Attitudes like this are the reason that the County has problems with the City, an eliteitism that rears its ugly head every so often. The person that made the remark in the SBC meeting is very mislead and often out spoken when she should keep her thoughts to herself. I for one feel that the kind of statement shows complete ignorance.
