Schwan's Food who has Tony's , Reb Baron and Freschetta pizza to name a few of their products come off a record in sales for the 2007 year. The award given to many of their employees a pay cut.

Problem is, if sales go south, they not only cut pay they cut jobs or move the company.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this happens all the time.

My sister works for Schwans and hasn't heard anything about this. And I'm eating Schwan's chicken nuggets as we speak.

It involved salesmen and merchandiser at least in Central,Ohio.

From what I have heard it was a company thing not just an area thing.

My friend will lose 5500 with the new method of paying A.K.A. paycut.

^ Let me explain something about "sales" growth. A lot of comanies like Schwan's use dollar figures to explain sales growth. Well, we are in an inflationary market, meaning that the same goods we bought a year ago cost more now. That said, if Schwan's sold (for example) 1,000 cases or product at $50/case, a year ago, with today's inflation, they likely would go for $67-$70 a case now. Meaning, that if you sold the same number of cases your sales would have jumped from $5,000 - $7,000. The real problem is, they likely sold less cases, but their fuel costs soared. A false growth is a very scary thing, my company tracks our sales growth, and our PIECE growth, to track real sales. From working with Schwan's product and such, I give them a pass in this issue.

An increase in sales doesn't necessarily mean that the company saw an increase in profits. Maybe profits increased, maybe they didn't. How were expenses?

A real indicator would be sales, profit dollars / profit %, and final operating result. At my branch we ran about 14% operating result through the first 3 months last year. This year through the same time period our sales have just about doubled but our operating result is about 6%. Like RP said, if Schwan hasn't increased margins with rising product and fuel cost then they aren't putting as many $ to the bottom line even with more sales.

You can always turn the numbers however you want. Sales aren't necessarily translating into high profits. As some have said, the cost of their products may have increased, while not increasing the price. Very hard to judge what is going on here without seeing all the numbers.

My friend said all they were told was it was the best year in the history of the company and then bam thank you, you now will make less money.

One Kroger manager told me Tony's and Red Baron along with Freshetta was next.

 

My days of eating any of these are done.

 

I figure I can get a real pie for a few bucks more and it will be made fresh.

 

*** In our area Kroger is the 2nd highest grocery store around only Giant Eagle is higher.
