For what it's worth, I don't mind playing some "elite" teams. The problem is playing them back to back or before important district games. You have to be smart about it or, if you feel like your program needs a confidence booster, don't schedule any of the GCL big boys at all.

I've never had a problem with the level of talent CCH schedules and I dont understand how it could be a problem. Anyone that thinks CCH hasn't been able to compete has not been watching. CCH has not been overmatched since the 2003 seasona against Elder.

 

I love their scheduling. I can't standing watching mismatches. As a fan and/or a parent of a player, I'd rather watch them go up against Cincy X/Louisville X/Elder/Moe/LaSalle than against poor NKY teams. I can't imagine being a BW fan with half of your season simply being no contests.

 

What am I missing? What's the downside to a tough schedule?

Being a Highlands fan, I hate to see CovCath scheduling GCL/L'Ville teams. It just proves they picked up the clue phone and are bettering their program! Previous poster is correct about WHEN to schedule them...you don't want them the week before HHS or the week before going into the playoffs (although the first week of playoffs is ridiculous in mismatches). Another previous poster is also correct that blowouts don't make you better either. But sometimes the risk is worth a drubbing. Playing in venues such as PBS, Nippert, or traveling to Canton to play in the Herbie are games these players will NEVER forget...blowouts are easily forgotten.

CCH has been doing this for quite a while. It seems like they've played a GCL team every year for about 6 or 7 years.

The only downside I could see would be injury. And that can happen in ANY game...it's just when your playing a team that has separate teams for O-D and every special team versus a team that has 4-5 guys going both ways.

Right. Injuries can happen in any game on any sort of freak play so why not go ahead and play big games in big venues? CCH platoons for the most part as well.

Hey, I'm all for a tough schedule. You gotta schedule SMART though. Keep in mind which games matter...give the team enough recovery time...and go back at it! It'll only make for a better program/players.

A couple of others did a good job of making the counter point. Of course the 2006 CCH team was a match for most teams but of course you did conveniently forget to mention the tail kicking Bishop Watterson, OH put on CCH in 2006.

 

Also, I said several years and a little too much. You focused on the best CCH team in recent memory but still conveniently forgot to include their worst loss to a smaller Ohio team.

Finally, other than beating Moeller once back in the late 80's what does the CCH resume against Ohio powers say? Since you are making a case I couldn't be more wrong why don't you prove it by giving everyone your long, thought out list of great CCH wins against Ohio powers?

What does Beechwood have to do with it? I agree the Beechwood schedule's have often been snoozers but some of that is beyond Beechwood's control. This past year I thought Beechwood did a good job with the schedule but I agree it has been too easy in a lot of other years but you can't argue with the results.

 

Furthermore, I am surprised you would characterize CCH playing Indian Hill, OH and LexCath as mismatches. As a fan and/or parent of a player I would much rather watch my team play solid competition that is somewhere close to being my equal rather than play bigger schools that beat my team 9 out of 10 times.

LexCath would be a tough out for the likes of CCH or HHS year in and year out. I'm even say that a game against LexCath during the latter part of a season would do more to prepare CCH for the kind of competition CCH would have to go through to win a state title than Moeller, Elder, Cincy St. X, etc. The same goes for HHS.

Watterson is the same size as CovCath, but the Watty loss was a week after the Cincy X game. Goes back to my point about smarter scheduling and not going back to back with the elite teams. And Watterson was a very good team that year. I believe the same thing happened to Highlands in 05 when they played Colerain and Louisville X back to back.

The Moe win was in the early 90's at Galbreath Field. It was definately not in the 80's.

I cannot wait for August 30th. This is an absolute honor to be playing in this game against one of the better teams in Ohio. When I heard we were goin to Canton, I was so excited. Hopefully we can pull of a W for the Colonels, but for the entire Bluegrass State!

Not about making the case about beating them. Highlands resume is just as bad. It's about competing and not beating them and I have done that. You said they should drop Elder and I said most years they compete. I made my point and you conveniently made it about winning to sway the argument to your side. Please stay on point.

Once again everyone. Not making excuses for the losses. They could have won some of those games against the GCL schools and did not. Just saying they competed and not way over their heads. Just saying games like that make you better for Kentucky post season. The case could be made the that the loss last year to Louisville St. X, a game they also competed in and deserved to lose, helped them beat Dixie in the playoffs.
