Someone made the comment about catholic winning with home grown catholic kids? I don't know this for sure BUT I think Vee Sandford isn't Catholic. He transferred in from Lafayette. Congrats to Catholic though!

Yes, I knew that Vee was a transfer when I posted. Just giving credit for the rest of the players as they were all developed through the catholic system.

Refs - there does seem to be a new crop of officials working their way up through the ranks. I see new refs go from freshman to varsity in 1-2 years.

 

I think the way the refs called the LexCath vs Station game had an impact. But, I am not implying they gave the game to LexCath. It was pretty evenly called both ways. It was really a style of officiating last night. They called it very close, especially in the first half. No incidental bumping or hand checking. That impacted Bryan Station because of the style of defense they play. Most of Stations offense comes off their defense. Play helter-skelter.

 

The only call that I thought was bad was the technical on Combs in the first half. I was sitting 2 rows up along the baseline where the call happened. The block call on Combs could have went either way. There was a little shuffling by both players immediately after the play. But Combs started backing up, and put his hands up like he was trying to get away from the LexCath kid. The ref gave him a technical. Now he could have said something that I couldn't hear. But he definitely wasn't going after the LexCath kid.

 

This is 3-4 years now that Station had their chances with good teams but couldn't get it done.

Actually, the game didn't seem that closely called to me. There was a lot of hand checking and pushing on defense by both teams in my opinion. Novosel had a couple of blocks that I thought looked like fouls also. However, that technical was on a block and I believe Combs got called not for blocking but for too much body on a block. He then appeared to be taunting, not going after Botkin. That is how most people interpreted it where I sat. Whether it was good or not, I don't know, but he definately said something after the play.

The refs called it to LexCath's style of ball. Bryan Station couldn't adjust, so they got thumped. I was very complimentary of how Catholic has played of late. Both on this board and others. I think they will be hard to beat in the sweet 16. I am hoping to see LexCath and Mason in the finals.

He blocked the shot and got called for the foul, then he stood over top of the kid and stared him down (he probably said something too). Then when the other Cath players walked over to help Botkin up, he put his hands up but didn't back away, he deserved the technical, even if he didn't say anything, he was taunting, plain and simple.

 

Btw, I have seen Combs act this way in previous games as well, taunting after a block. I'm sure the refs know how he is too. So that history won't give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sorry I mis-understood this part of your comment. I thought your were saying it may not have been a foul to begin with. Actually from Stations side it was a good foul. It saved 2 pts, (the kid missed both freethrows) However, the tech came after the taunting (both tech freethrows made). The same situation happened in the Dunbar game. (Only Combs shots was blocked and he taunted the player who blocked it.) Sorry if I seemed sensitive, I wanted to give a different point of view. Maybe not accurate, but a different point of view.

From a basketball purist standpoint the foul was good, prevented any attempt for 3 point play.... Just happened to read Mike Fields blog and saw the pic....

I think you are misunderstanding things. No one is getting sensitive or offended here. I just stated my opinion that the game wasn't called as closely. I also went on to say I thought Novosel got away with couple blocks on Bryan Station shots where I thought he actually fouled the shooter. Otherwise, I just disagreed with your opinion of the Combs foul where he got the T. It was definately a foul and afterwards it did appear he was taunting Botkin. Either way, I thought the biggest negative for Bryan Station was that they didn't handle the Lex Cath pressure early on and Lex Cath turned their turnovers into points. This and Comb's early fouls seemed to slow down Bryan Station's tempo some.

Very insightful, Marovich. Any reason why UK hasnt looked at this kid??? I know he played good, not great tonight, but with the season he had I'm really surprised he hasnt gotten a call from Billy G.

 

It has amazed me for years how UK has overlooked local talent. It remains to be seen Billy G's approach, but Tubby was something of a mystery. I agree that Taylor Stewart would be a terrific catch. I've watched this kid for five years now and I see dramatic improvement in every phase of his game, plus he's got nice size and is a great student. He doesn't fit the mold of a "McDonalds All American" who stars in national dunk contests, but he's a heck of a good bball player. I'll be interested to see if Billy G does look at him.

I only saw Jeff Shephard's final year at UK, but Taylor Stewart reminds me of a slightly larger version. As I recall, Shephard was not a great outside shooter to start, but became very capable during his college career. Shephard was Final Four MVP was he not?

He can't be looked at, he has signed his national letter of intent with Air Force. He's "off the market".
