He had a grand total of one win last year so I don't see how he improved anything except maybe the passing game but on the other hand he threw a screen pass about 99 times to one receiver. At times last year he didn't have enough players to scrimage during practice, and to me there must be a reason behind that and there is no excuse for it.

 

Well you entitled to your opinion but improvements are measured in other ways than wins and losses. Lets be honest here Lewis went 5-5 as their best seasons and those years were few and far. Good luck finding a coach up that way. I would venture to say whatever your feelings for Combs are you will be wishing he stayed.

On the issue of hiring within or not, I believe there are in county people that can handle the position and maybe get some kids out that were not playing. Most young out of town coaches are only going to use Lewis job as a stepping stone. Coach Combs got out at the right time, as you can only blame so many 1 win seasons on the previous staff. He never blamed anyone! You need to get your facts straight. He respected the job Corky Prater done at Lewis County and what he stood for. Some of things that were wrong with the program was greater then Corky. The community and parents are very appathic and didn't like the style of coach that coach Combs is. He had high expectations and demanded a lot of the kids. But the kids didn't no part of it...why? Because they are use to apathy. By no means is that the kids fault.....they had to learn it from somewhere. It's not in just the sport of Football but all sports....most or all coaches from there will tell you that. The good thing is there is a small group of parents and community members that want to change that aspect of Lewis County.....and as of right now they are on the right track. They need someone (head coach) to pick up where Coach Combs left off and continue the fight to get the kids to believe in theirselves and have pride in where they are from.

 

As for Coach Combs he left Lewis County to better his family. It wasn't because of a record or because he was forced out, or to better his resume. He is a family man and when he took the job at Lewis County he had no thoughts of having children and now he will have 2 boys. He left college ball a few years back to be a better husband, now he left Lewis county so he could be a better father. You have to respect that. Good luck to Coach Combs and his family. Sounds like you need to do less hunting and more helping with the program. Instead of being the person tearing it down...be the person building it up. :thumb:

I didn't mean that he blamed anyone for anything, if you will read what I said, it was that you can't blame too many bad seasons on the previous staff when a resume looks bad. I never met Coach Combs, but I don't blame him for leaving. It is pretty much a fact that any out of town young coach Lewis County gets, they will not keep. There is not enough support there, at least now the facilities are getting better, which is a start. Maybe one day it will be better.

I think it may help them to follow the UK plan and bring in an older veteran coach that can build the program and groom a younger coach to take over when the program is on more solid ground. That way maybe the younger coach will get seeded in the program and won't want to leave for greener pasture.

If I were at Lewis, I would look at Raceland's coaching staff, they have an abundance of great coaches who IMO are ready for a head coaching position. Maynard has already proven he is more than qualified. Gary Fannin would be a great head coach, I just dont know if he would ever leave Raceland. It would have to be alot of money, he would have to buy a whole new wardrobe LOL. GC also has a couple of guys that might be interested.

 

If they do go for a younger coach I've heard that one of the the receivers coaches at Greenup Co. is going to be a good one. I think his name is Mullins.

IMO, Lewis co. needs to bring in someone who will continue to run the same offense Coach Combs ran. With Andy Downing at QB, he has the smarts to head the offense. With more players, Jake Bolander and Frankie Witten will be forces on defense. And hopefully, this coach will bring some assistants to help incorporate his ideas quickly. Some of the assistants can stay to help, but the new coach needs to get involoved ASAP.

True, these things should happen ASAP. How will his leaving affect some of the key players? How will it affect parents and alumni that had committed and believed in coach Combs? Coach Combs had to make decisions to better his family, as he should. Combs has done a great job with this program, showed the program the needs and proper ways to teach and practice each position and as a team. The kids that accepted him have greatly improved their game, those kids that didnt was not ready for the work and effort. That seems to be the biggest reason for the drop in numbers. 2008 season was really looking good. A large number of kids had verbaly committed to play, with key players returning. I just hope the program doesn't take two steps back after taking one step forward. I know Brandon put a lot of pride in some of these kids heart, helped them believe in themselves and find the player he thought they could be.
