Bengal Draft Scenario

In either scenario, I just hope the Bengals don't take Phil Merling from Clemson just to take a DL. Cedric Ellis has to be our priority and if he's not there, we trade down.

Here is the trade value sheet Jimmy Johnson used to use for draft pick value to determine what he would trade for picks. Most GMs have stuck to this over time, but recently some have gone away from it. This may give us a basis for an arguement.

Thats pretty cool! But with future draft picks, you would still have to guess where the team will finish the next year.

I think Cincy will end up with Gholsten. I wouldn't be suprised to see the Jets end up getting McFadden. The Jets have gotten a lot better this off season IMO.

Thanks for Jimmy Johnsons value chart. I had always heard a ton about it but have never seen it.

Yeah, you're right. I don't know though that the Pats, with the way they operate, would be interested in losing out on a top 10 pick this year while giving an AFC team two top 10 picks and wait until next year to add to their team. The draft has been very important to the Pats; I think any trade that involves their 7 pick would have to get them a first round pick this year. At least if I was the GM, it would.

I think if Gholston is on the board the bengals can't pass on him. Even if that costs them a great DT like Dorsey.

How about a more realistic scenario?

Going by JJ's draft sheet, should Cincy trade the #9 pick and their third rounder to New England to move up two spots and assure that they get an elite DT...

Obviously, if both guys are still available, there's a decent chance Cincy could stand pat and get one of them...but, if one of them is gone, can they afford to risk the other guy going at #7 or #8...and don't be so sure that the Pats won't take a DT.

I would think all teams do this to an extent but the Bengals need to have a contingency plan based on who is drafted with each pick. In other words, the Bengals have to be well prepared to trade up in a seconds notice with the eight teams ahead of them to ensure they get Ellis or Dorsey.

I agree. They have to get one of those guys...and my preference would be Ellis, to be honest. The fact that Dorsey was injured every year turns me off...

If I were in charge of Cincy's draft, Ellis would be my guy. If Dorsey went before #7, I'd be prepared to trade up and get him. As long as both were still on the board, I think I'd take the risk and stay put...

Of course, I'm not sold that Ellis won't be picked ahead of Dorsey...if I thought that might happen and the draft was down to pick #6 or #7, I would seriously consider making the move to get my guy.

But if they wanted a DT, why would they trade with us knowing we are trading up to take one?

Because want is different than need. The Pats don't need a DT, but they may take a guy that has a high value on their chart, i.e. Dorsey or Ellis. The Pats need a CB, which they could get at 9 (McKelvin, Talib, Jenkins, etc.)

The Bengals are sitting in a situation right now where they could end up with Albert Haynesworth for this years #2 and next years #2 PLUS end up with Gholston! They have got to get in gear and go get Haynesworth NOW! If they land those two then they have really set the table to make some serious noise IMO! Bengals fans would have to be estatic to get "Big Albert" and the Big 10 Defensive Player of the year that just happens to be a Buckeye!

But if they wanted a DT, why would they trade with us knowing we are trading up to take one?

My point was that the DT availabe at 7 might grade out high enough that Belichick would take him rather than reach for a DB who isn't worth picking that high...defensive line is so valuable, I really don't think you can go wrong picking great DT's and DE's...so, if Cincy is gambling that New England won't pick one of those guys because the consensus is they have bigger needs elsewhere, they may get burned.

In addition, the threat of the Patriots working out a deal with someone else is always there...what if another team makes that deal, jumps ahead of Cincy and drafts their guy.

I really think if Ellis is available at #7 and Cincy can get that pick from New England by giving up their #9 and a later round pick, they should do it.

Question: Does anyone think either Dorsey or Ellis will be left at #9? I don't. If Cincy wants one of those guys, they have to move up, IMO. Forget about trading up with New England at #7. Why not explore the option of getting the #1 pick from the Dolphins?
