Somerset Program- Class and competitive

Coach Thacker- Class! Good Coach and does well for his kids.

District Game vs Pulaksi- Rival Game- anything can happen in those games. Bottom line- They are in region- only 8 teams have a shot at going to Rupp now and they are one of them- what more do you want than a chance. I dont think the people of Somerset can get a better coach for thier program- and to be honest the program is in good shape!

As this is the Basketball thread, I am referring to the basketball team. One pays tuition on the team. The other team members all live in the city and have always gone to school together. You can rest assured that Pulaski BOE monitors this list very closely.....if I were a Pulaski fan, i would be very careful about what I said about bringing in others out of district/county to play athletics.

I would like to hear a detailed explanation of that comment about Pulaski County jumpermom.

Past history; I'm a PC graduate-things happened in the 80's and things have happened in recent years-I was referring to the motto I've always heard, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I was setting the record straight about Somerset's basketball team. (IMO)Feel free to drive thru the city limits and you will see many more of those "little bunny ears"; our seniors are very proud of them;they represent lots of dedication and hard work.

So is this a coach bashing thread or a team bashing thread??? With that many armchair coaches and players on bluegrass preps, we should start our own league.

True, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. So....when you try to get people to come to your school and they choose another--don't accuse the other school. This is not the 80's and I too know of the reputation they had when you were in school there. Not being a PC graduate, I can only speak of the current school and these kids, teachers and coaches, etc. can't help what happened in the 80's. If you were so discouraged at PC, you should have had your parents get you on that waiting list.

Let me put it this way.

 

Swap out Thacker and the Monticello coach and see what happens. Somerset has enough talent and athletes to compete with anyone in the 12th, and they're consistently rated in the top half of region during the preseason. However, after a good start, Thacker's teams usually sputter and fail to post anything in the postseason. I bet you can put Shultz in at Somerset and he would have them in not only in the region tournament every year, but competing for the title.

 

Monticello and Somerset are both 1A schools, enrollment wise. But everyone knows in this region that Somerset has more basketball players and athletes than Monticello could imagine. And many times, Somerset has more players and athletes than the bigger schools (Southwestern, McCreary, Wayne, Pulaski, Casey, Rockcastle).

 

 

You pretty much made my argument for me. You said that Somerset is usually in the TOP HALF of the 12th Region. How many teams are in the 12th Region? 17. They are not usually considered (nor should they) to be among the top 3-4 teams. Since 8 teams make the Regional Tourney then making the Region puts you in the top half numberswise, correct? This is the 4th season that they have made the Regional Tourney under Thacker in his 9th season so he's made it a little bit less than half of the time. Now take into consideration that this is only the 3rd season with the new districts and Somerset has now made the Region in 2 of them. Before Somerset was in a District with North and South Laurel, Pulaski and Southwestern. The District was seeded and while Somerset may have been in the TOP HALF of the Region they were usually somewhere in the 4-6 range and usually had 2-3 of the teams rated ahead of them in the same District. You do the math, it was a lot harder to get out of a District with those four teams than your District with Monticello, Russell Co. and Wayne Co. As for the team going into a tailspin after the All A they don't have a very good record most years after Richmond however, their schedule usually was much tougher the last month of the season. And as for your athlete comment, you used Monticello as a comparison. How about Danville? They've got all kinds of athletes on their team but haven't managed to post much of a threat to anyone since what? 2002? Somerset's program is solid all the way down to 6th Grade and the Middle School teams went a combined 59-21, including 7-0 against your Raiders. The Jumpers will probably take a step back next season with the loss of all those Seniors but the future is bright and Coach Thacker has had a huge part in building the AAU/Middle School Program to where it is now--he's also a very good guy. As another poster said, at least the Jumpers are going to the Region for the 2nd year in a row. For all of your talk about the 12th Region being a two horse race it would seem one of those horses keeps coming up lame in the first round. Good luck to the Maroons and Warriors in the Region!

Congrats to Coach Flynn and the Maroons. A rivalry game, also. I have seen both teams play, although not the two games against each other, and even though they have different strengths and weaknesses, I feel that Somerset has the better team. No slight to Pulaski Co. I guess they have the Briar Jumpers number this season.

Isn't it funny how one team can do that to another. I agree that, on paper, Somerset is better than PC this year, but PC just matches up w/ Somerset very well. It goes the same way w/ Southwestern, a team that only won 4 games in the regular season, but 2 were against Pulaski. The Warriors just matched up w/ PC very well. I truly think there will be an upset in the tourney w/ Wayne and/or Lincoln getting knocked off. It's going to be a fun one to watch!

No but another brother combination did. Perhaps you've heard of them--the Hansons. Also Barry Stringer off of their Championship Team lived in Casey County--I played baseball with him at Campbellsville College and he admitted as much. At the time it probably was okay. The Hansons came from NC by way of McCreary County through the Job Corps.

Take him off the team & SHS wins 4 games MAX! Where do more than 1 of your basketball players live? I'll give you a hint... NOT in the city! Let's not even get into the middle school kids who make up the better part of the basketball, baseball, & football teams. We can even talk about the girls team with certain starters living in the county. So, YES Pulaski County helps Somerset a lot more than some Somerset fans are willing to admit. Do away with the tuition list & Somerset would struggle to compete with the all A schools, let alone the rest of the region.

There is only one player for Somersets varsity basketball team that lives outside the city!! So take that one player away and Somerset still competes just fine in the region and most definetely still wins the All A Region..
