Rose Hill 63 Ashland 61 (64th District Championship)

I can remember a couple of years ago when Dickie came to Richmond and did some All A Classic games. I thought he did a great job as a play by play announcer.

Make no mistake....he is an excellent play by play man....

I have long said Dickie is one of the best play-by-play men in the business. The problem is, his "editorial" comments toward opponent's players and coaches often hurt feelings.

I can see where he would do a great job at the All A, where he's a neutral observer and very professional announcer without a dog in the fight. That all changes when his Cats are in the mix. Objectivity takes a backseat to partisanship, he leaves no doubt who he's rooting on... BUT, isn't that what you would want in your school's play-by-play team?

Dickie is great when it comes to his play by play. He let's his emotions and his love for Ashland get in the way though. I could personally go without some of the remarks he has made about other schools players, coaches, fans and anyone else who doesnt wear maroon over the years.

As for wanting him as my schools play by play man ? No, not really. I think if I were an Ashland fan I would actually be embarrassed by some of the remarks he makes and the child like tantrums he throws when Ashland is having a down year or losing a game. I've noticed lately (strating last football season) he has even started to talk bad about some of the tomcats when they are having a bad game. Questioning the coaches play calling and so on.

This thread is a great example. A great ball game was played last night where an underdog Ashland team, that many had counted out, almost pulled a huge upset and won the district. And what are we talking about ? Dickie Martin and a remark he made that he probably shouldnt have.

I think if I were a fan of Ashland I would get tired of defending him.

Amen brother. Can't stand to listen to him because he's just to unprofessional and biased. I don't mind him being for his team, but he goes way beyond the middle. He could learn a lesson from GoRadio, who does a good job without showing a lot of bias for the home team during the broadcast.

It was a great game last night. Got to give Ashland a lot of credit for playing the way they did. They were a 1000 times better than any other time I've seen them play this year. I didn't think they would have a chance, but they sure gave it a run.

Also a great game for Rose Hill. That first district championship has to be awfully sweet this morning.

I wanted to compliment coach Biggs on his coaching too. I sat close to him for a half and he did an excellent job. It's kind of interesting to watch and listen to a coach while the game is being played. While the fans are mostly watching the ball, the coaches have to be aware of everything going on everywhere on the court. He seems like a sharp cat to me.

I thought Ashland played the best game they have played all year. Matt Thomas could not miss and took control of the game for Ashland. IF Ashland can continue to shoot like they did last night they will be tough.

I was waiting for someone to say something about Dickie Martin. The comments he made about our players last night were completely uncalled for and had nothing to do with the game. These kids are playing a game they love, that they put their heart and soul into and then they to have their self-esteem beat down by an adult making comments he shouldn't. All I can say is alot of people are upset about this including myself. I think he has stepped on one too many toes this time.:madman::madman:

Rose Hill Royals Rock!!!!!!:ylsuper: The smell of victory is so sweet!!!:ylsuper:

A few notes.

1. Shooterx3 is partially correct. The game was a 8 point game with right at a miniute left and Rose Hill seemed to be in complete control. Ashland hits a couple of threes, Rose Hill misses two front ends and the game got tight pretty quick. However, the final score wasn't the closest Ashland got. They actually closed within 1 point.

2. I understand that Mike Davis was referred to as a transfer on the radio. Mike has been at Rose Hill since kindergarden with the exception of a couple of months during his 8th grade year. So to refer to him as a transfer is a stretch at best. I find it interesting that Malloy isn't referred to as a transfer from Holy Family. Maybe, it is because 40% of Ashland's starters are Holy Family boys.

3. If Mr. Martin is complaining that means Rose Hill is scoring more points than his team. Trust me he didn't make any negative remarks 5 years ago when Ashland won by 60. That my friends is a pretty good trade off.

Truth is he did even then make some remarks about the talent of the kids and the fact that they could not even hit layups in warmups. Laughing he refered to them as sad. It may have been a small thing to some, but it showed how small he is.

Just for the record I should have put quotation marks around "could not even hit layups in warmups". Martin said this while laughing at the kids.

I stand corrected. I still say it just makes the win all that much sweeter knowing that it is causing this much distress.

I'm glad your not an Ashland fan.

If you are speaking of me then I must say that I have great respect for their coaches and players. Fans are fans and the vast, vast majority, even you:D are great. But when ever someone uses the radio to attack children, whether by ridiculing them or misrepresenting things, then I have to take exception.

"And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins." Mark 11:25

I am in no way condoning what Mr Martin has done in the past, but you really have to get past it.
