Am I right about NCC being ranked no. 1 and only having 1 loss that year going into the Sweet 16?

 

I do know they were 33-1. So I am assuming they were #1.

This is from the state tournament program from 2006. I've listed teams from the modern era:

 

1984, Scott County (13-16)

2000, Mercer County (15-17)

1987, Rowan County (15-16)

1989, Oldham County (16-16)

 

I am pretty sure Scott Co. won the 32nd District, so that means their regular season record was 8-16.

Gosh is that accurate? I remember that Rowan team as being pretty solid. I would have thought their record was much better....

 

I'm guessing so. That was the first of three straight regional titles for Rowan County. Maybe you're thinking of the '88 or '89 teams that had better records?

I believe this was Kelly Well's freshman year. That team caught fire late in the season and was on a roll...they went to the state tournament the next two years as well with 20+ win seasons. They were a bunch of young kids that had a nice three year run - coached by Tim Moore.

Wasnt '87 Greg Adkins Sr year? and a Price guy...maybe Mike Price? I really thought they were a 20 game winner in '87 too.......I guess the memory is one of the first things to go.....I forget what they next thing is.

Rowan was fairly solid in my memory too. But the rest of 16 wasn't. It's been a bit of lull.

I remember Scott Co beat a 33 win NCC team in the 1st round. I believe they were lead by Frank Persley.

 

I am almost positive you are right on Persley playing on that team. I and I am about the same way about the NCC being # 1.

Plus I could be wrong on this too but I think NCC's only loss was to an Ohio team. So they were 33-0 against Kentucky teams. I could be way off base on that but I don't think I am.

I was thinking Adkins graduated in 88 (not sure though) he was a very good player. I think 88 was there best team IMO.

Actually, Boyd County had a pretty good team that year...I think Rowan upset them in the regional final. Boyd was the favorite that year.

I think you're right about the Adkins kid...he was a very good player on that team.
