CovCath 61 Holy Cross 51 (35 district)

Early on it looked like HC had upset on their minds as they went back and forth with CCH and exchanged leads up until a few minutes before halftime. Sorrell had 15 at the galf, all coming on backing down smaller defenders and getting lay ups or using floaters in the lane.

Second half, it was all CCH. I was very surprise with how aggressive CCH was on the boards. They killed HC with second and third chance points. IMO that's where the game was won. Turning point was when Shover got the 4 point play. HC was down 3 and that made it 7. They could never fully recovered from there.

Officiating was very poor on both sides. A lot of ticky tack fouls on both teams. One that sticks out to me was when Sorrell was dribbling and got thrown down by a CCH player and they called a jumpball after the CCH player practically pushed him down then started to grab the ball. The way he reacted to the call wasn't something a senior leader should do though when his team is down.

The better team won tonight though. CCH shot the ball well, rebounded well, and for the most part played solid defense.

Yeah, it came over in dramatic fashion, but if I'm giving my competitive best to the Nth degree like he was, I don't know that I'd be able to react any differently. Frustrating as heck to work that hard, get thrown to the floor and have the call go against you. He showed his fire, but as a senior leader I don't think it hindered the fire and drive that the team was displaying to stay alive under such tall odds. I like his fire and other than his undeniable talent, he's going to need it at the next level and it probably won't be questioned there. He's a man amongst boys right now. It will be great to see him show his stuff when his toughness is displayed in the company of men. NKU got a good one.:thumb:

Sorrell was on fire...again. I don't know if he saves these games for the Colonels or if Cov. Cath. just doesn't match up well, but the guy looked like Larry Bird tonight. The Holy Cross student section had a great cheer. Moses in a toga complete with a staff....parts the Red Sea of the Indian student section from the floor to the top of the lower level. Very creative. Well executed. The game was nip and tuck until Shover was fouled in the act of draining a 3. Holy Cross never recovered from that 4 point possession. Cov. Cath. played very solid. Balanced attack. As a long time Colonel fan who enjoyed cheering for Tom and Steve Sorrell in the 70's, I want to wish Corey the best at NKU. He is going to be fun to watch in the new Bank of Ky Arena. The only glitch in the evening was when a lone lunatic came into the Cov. Cath. student section and started hassling the kids. Kudos to Cov. Cath. principal Clines for quickly hailing the police to dispense some swift Covington P.D. justice.

Obviously Sorrell played well and scored very well, but he wasn't on fire. He missed most if not all of his shots outside of 12 feet and he missed some free throws tonight. I'm not taking anything away from him and 28 points speaks for itself. But to pull the upset he actually was going to have tb be on fire. Did he make a 3 the entire game?

I don't think that he did hit a 3. CovCath shut that down pretty good, but 28 points with no 3's strongly points to a player whose game is more diverse than just the magnificent shooter we know that he is. Boy if he did hit those 3's we really might be talking upset this morning. CCH deserves a lot of credit to at least shut down that facet of his game. What a player you have there to have way too many options for anyone to completely shut him down. It's great that we'll have the pleasure of seeing him close to home for the next 4 years. Who knows, half way through his schooling some D1 schools might be knocking at his door. We haven't seen the last of him. He's only going to get better. :thumb:

That is 13 straight wins (and 19 out of 20 games) for Covington Catholic over Holy Cross, dating back to 2000 when HC won a regular season matchup against the Colonels. FWIW, CCH beat HC 2 out of 3 times that year & ended up beating the Indians in the district tournament later that year.

Where there is smoke... Sorrell was blanketed all night long by very athletic and physical defenders including Schmerge, Grimes, with a dash of Maile sprinkled in and non-stop double teams. Coach Listerman is horse from yelling HELP whenever Sorrell touched the ball in the paint at which time the rest of the Cov. Cath. tribe collapsed on him, swatting, pushing, pulling, gouging, etc. We darn near shut him out, except for the 28 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. And, by the way, Corey did have a 3. True, he missed a couple of free throws and some shots in the second half. Secretariat couldn't have kept up his pace without showing some signs of fatigue. I'll stand by my observation that Sorrell was "en fuego".

Look obvioulsy he played well and to score 28 w/ the defense so concentrated on him just shows how good he really is. My observation is that for them to pull the upset he was going to have to be "on fire". I'm sure he would tell you that he missed some he thought he could make. I don't remember him hitting a 3, but even if he hit one that was probably the only field goal he hit ouside of 10 feet and he took a few. I said before the game that he went 15-21 last time and they took the L. I really thought for them to win he would have to be at least 15-21 for 37 if not better.

When was the last time HC made the regional? Its been a while, hasn't it?

2003/2004 I believe. Holmes center Alexie Brown went down with an injury and HC upset them in the first round of districts. CCH went on to beat HC in the championship.

To me the game came down to HC not doing enough defensively, the soft man and 2-3 zone allowed CCH to execute their offense without any distractions. Time and time again they worked 6-8 passes to a wide open shot, and when they missed that shot they got the rebound and put it back in. It looked as if Cory not only had to carry the scoring load but if he didn't get the rebound somebody in blue and white was going to.

By the way the Refs were not good but it had no bearing on the outcome on the game.

When you have no bench and you have to protect your scorer, you play the 2-3 and live with it. Unfortunately, it gives up shots and it gives up offensive rebounds. HC didn't have the manpower to play man.

They played 8 players and Cory picked up his first foul late into the second half. If they truely expected to win a game against a team that executes that well with that defensive philosophy they were mistaken. Giwa, Roneker and Easton are all good athletes that were plenty capable of putting more pressure on the ball.

They may have played 8 but they could not win without their top 5 playing 28 to 30 minutes. In a man, you expose Cory to early foul trouble and then you have zero scorers left - athletes yes - scorers no. They took their only shot and it failed. That happens.

Hello??? Is anyone gonna tell me when the game is. I don't know.
