I am only 26 years old and didnt really follow poltics in high school but I have been very interested in this subject for a while and I havent heard of a better speaker than Obama. When he spoke the other day after winning Wisconsin it gave me chill bumps and inspired me. I dont know if he is the best canadate but I do really enjoy listening to him....

 

Can people on here tell weigh on some people that they enjoy listening to....

From a historical standpoint Abe Lincoln and Jesus Christ is hard to beat, but Obama is VERY good.

I gotta say that I'm with you here. Usually, I find myself bored with political speeches, but I saw the Wisconsin victory speech and was wowed by his speaking ability and his overall message of hope.

 

Kinda reminds me a little of MLK Jr, who is probably my all-time favorite speaker.

Obama is indeed an articulate man with a very nice speaking style. Despite the fact that I couldn't stand him, I must also admit that I felt Slick Willie Clinton had a very polished speaking style.

I enjoy a good ole "W" speech sometimes!

You need to look up and listen to some FDR and Winston Churchhill, if you want to hear some quality public speakers. Billy Graham is excellent, too. And you can never go wrong with a little Ronald Wilson Reagan.

In my lifetimes, Bill Clinton & Barack Obama are very good.

 

From talks & perspective from history, JFK and MLK are also very good. Didn't hear them but videos of speeches are very moving.

I'd imagine Socrates was phenomenal from reading parts of The Republic.

 

I haven't seen Obama speak much in a non-debate forum but I wasn't impressed when I saw him at a rally. But I bet he much better when he has a speech that is already written.

This got me thinking about world historical figures. Even though he used it in the worst way possible, Adolf Hitler was a great rhetorical speaker. Not condoning what he did but facts are that he was a great speaker/brainwasher/psycho.

When I listen closely to Obama, I am not impressed. He has the voice and all of the mechanics of a great speaker but he spends too much time saying nothing, IMO. Obama is as good as the speech that he reads.

 

To be a great speaker, I think you have to be able to think quickly on your feet and I do not believe that our political system produces many great speakers. The public speaking skills of Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill, and Tony Snow have impressed me more than those of Sen. Obama. I think that the parliamentary system of government ensures that the British Prime Minister is an outstanding public speaker.

Agreed, Hitler gets his point across even if you don't understand German.

I would give Bill Clinton the edge over Obama but it's pretty hard to go against MLK jr for best all time.

I have often wondered what the breakdown of Hitler's audience was in terms of those who actually idolized him and those who clapped and cheered out of a fear for their lives. But like you said, he sure seemed to get his point across to a crowd.
