Eclipse

Featured Replies

I'm not sure if the moon ever goes completely dark during an eclipse. It may have to do with the relative distances of Earth and moon from the sun and each other. Where are our amateur astronomers to answer that question?

Ummmm....excuse me....that's me. ;)

As I stated....no...it will not ever go totally dark (unless there is a cloud :p).

Thinking the same thing.:thumb:

I had a weird feeling when I was standing outside looking at the moon...Kinda put the Earth in a whole new perspective...

I thought the exact same thing. I love Astronomy... so this event just makes things that much cooler.

I also noticed that the stars stand out more tonight. I dont know if it was just me or what... but it looks beautiful outside.

I thought this lunar eclipse was cool. I took a few pictures of it and will photoshop them tomorrow in class to try and make the eclipse itself look really stellar.

Astronomy is my biggest passion, outside of sports. For those of you that don't know, I am a science teacher and for the past couple of years I have been able to teach an astronomy class. My kids are enthralled with it...many have developed a passion for it for life.

The reason the stars stand out so brightly tonight is the very low humidity. Humidity normally drops with lower temperatures. A lower humidity mean less water vapor in the air to look through and obscure our view. I hope that the scientific explanation doesn't take the beauty out of it!

By the way, the dot to the left of the moon is Saturn.

Yes! Thank you! I was wondering what the planet was.. I thought it was Mars. Isn't Mars usually close to the moon?

That's why I asked! :p

I didn't know if it sometimes went totally dark, and you didn't say.

Not necessarily....the moon moves through the sky quite a bit faster than Mars does....and Mars moves quite a bit faster (over weeks) than Saturn does (months to notice much).

Also, the backwards question mark above the moon helps form the constellation Leo (the Lion).

That's why I asked! :p

Yes, yes...I wasn't clear enough....as if I don't hear THAT enough in the classroom, BF!

Ok.. well thank you for your knowledge. Any time I can learn a little bit more about our Solar System is time well spent.

I thought it was a song by the Floyd Boys.

Our ten year old wants to stay up past 11 PM and watch the whole thing. We got out my Binoculars and you could really see Saturn and the brightest star in Leo. Now he wants a telescope. I wouldn't mind getting him one. I love this stuff and was telling him about my picture I have of Haley's Comet.

12 years ago. I was on a train and it was a very dark night (Snoopy) and I could see it enough to take a picture.
