Ivan McGlone field to get makeover!!

Featured Replies

According to an email I received from the Russell Football Boosters President, the field is going to get a makeover. It is not turf, but is supposed to be like the one that Mason County has. The boosters were going to try to go with sod, but because of transportation costs (around 9,000 additional), they are going with spriggs.

If anyone knows more information please feel free to share.

I may be mistaken but the Mason County field contains what is called "crumb rubber". It is made from recycled tires. Raceland has this also and it really helps with drainage problems. The players seem to like it as well. MCpapa or Chiefsmoke may be able to provide more info.

McGlone Field is a great place to watch a game and the field makeover will make it even better.

Is this "crumb rubber" thing like a regular grass field but with small bits of rubber in it???

We have crumb rubber on our practice field but not on our game field.

Doug Vescio originally installed our bermuda on the game field with sprigs in 2003.

Chad Asbury takes care of our game field and reseeds the bermuda each June as needed. Rain games(soccer and football) destroyed our field in 2006. Chad rolled it and reseeded the field and it came back great- a minor miracle.

Since we installed bermuda, we have not had to regrade our game field. And, since the crumb rubber was installed in 2003, we have not had to regrade our practice field. We use to do those every other year.

We are very happy with the job Chad does with our field. We play football, soccer, and have a band contest each year. He does a great job of keeping it going with so much traffic on it through out the year.

It is a spray on type application of the crumb rubber (recycled tires) that are ground up so very fine that it is like sand. There is more than one step to this "spray on" application process. A specified amount of time was given between applications and after the process was completed there has to be period of time with no one/activity on the field. The fine (sand like) rubber goes on the existing grass and works through and bonds with the grass to provide a much stronger base/root system.

When complete it provides what amounts to around 1" - 2" rubber base under the grass and the root system has bonded with that. This provides a surface that is much softer/easier to land on, does not tear as bad so it is much more stable in wet weather conditions and drains MUCH better.

I just spoke with a person that was in the school administration when this was done. The cost of this was in the neighborhood of $58,000 and the expense was greatly helped/funded by a grant from the state/Frankfort.

As cville stated, this would make "the Hank" a really top notch stadium for high school football. The parking/acsess/seating accomodations at Russell are already very good and a good field/playing surface is what is desperately needed. JMO

Good luck to the Russell school system and boosters in getting this done :thumb:.

Thanks Old Rambler.

This sounds like a great idea for Russell, I personally wasn't a big fan of playing on the old field but this should help it tremendously.

Totally agree o.r. This year the field, maybe in the future a new fieldhouse and restrooms:cool:

I've also heard that Greenup Co. may be doing some work to their field. Any news on that?

Since you mentioned it your stadium imo does need much better restroom facilities. That to me anyway was/is the only down side to attending a game there. Just an outsiders view and opinion.:thumb:

:thumb: Thanks for the clarification. Sounds as if Mr. Asbury is the go to guy when it comes to turf problems.

I wish, But really does anyone on here expect GC to invest any money in the sports programs, we cant even replace the blown lights on the scoreboards in football or baseball.

If you did not drink so much before the game you would not have that problem. Easy on the orange stuff. I did like the Johnny on the spots at Raceland. They are nice and kozy.

The field should be in good shape when the rams row in town. For a real good night for FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL. You got to love it. It will be one of the best match ups in the area. Should be a big old knock down drag out. Good luck on the field.

First of all, I do not "drink"...... and that Orange stuff is called Orange Crush or Gatorade, can be bought at just about any grocery store :D:thumb:.

Nice there jeep, what does the facilities at Raceland have to do with the ones at Russell? I thought that was what this thread was about. As for your comment, I guess that Raceland could have not had them brought in for that game with Russell and made everyone stand in line at one restroom, sorry that you weren't catered to any better :D.

A Russell poster originally mentioned it (about the restrooms) and I merely agreed with him.

Now, back to the original thread topic. Like I said before, I honestly hope that Russell can get a good surface like they want on McGlone field.

I was just originally commenting on questions that Russell fans had about the spray on turf and then made a "light hearted" comment on another suggestion that a Russell fan had about the Russell facilities at Henry R. Evans Stadium. Again, good luck to Russell in getting a good playing surface like you want and decide on, it is all about the kids. :thumb:

There is a Loooooooooong way to go and plenty of more important (District) games to go for both teams before that one. Lets please not get that started now. :D
