Help with my water bill???

Featured Replies

Tried calling and they weren't very cooperative. I didn't ask about a leak audit though. Didn't know that existed, but I'll be sure to call back and ask about it.

My bill is for water and "wastewater/sewage usage" which I'm assuming is sanitation. Does approximately $100 every month make sense for both? I didn't know they were separate in some places...

Keep in mind, some utilities calculate usage in cubic feet not gallons.

If it's gallons, 15,000 per month seems like an awful lot. Our family of three rarely uses over 4,000 gallons a month.

Water bill for us here in Maysville is around $30 per month; sewer bill maybe $20 or so.

I average around $50 a month as well and that's a family of 4.

It's gotta be a leak and a pretty big one at that . Hows the fishing in that new lake near your duplex ?

May want to check outside the home to see if there is a leak anywhere. A friend of mine last year had a leak out by the street under the sidewalk. What a mess and it was expensive to repair. I don't think it is just a leaking toilet my friend. JD

That's good advise. Usually the homeowner is responsible for all plumbing between the meter and the house. Look for soft, mushy areas between the meter and where it enters the residence.

1 HCF = 748 gallons

Well, in Rowan, it was sewage (water waster) and sanitation (garbage pickup). With all of that together, it still wasn't usually $100.

OK. Our sanitation up here is our sewage. Our garbage pickup is part of our city taxes. You learn something new everyday here on BGP. :D

Quit taking half hour showers.

I just looked at some of my bills over the past few years, and it sounds like there may be something wrong with yours. Our usage ranges anywhere between 18 HCF and 41 HCF depending on the time of year. In the summer, it's the highest due to watering the lawn, filling up the little one's pool all the time, washing cars, etc. A single HCF equates to 748 gallons of water, so we are using anywhere from 13,464 to 30,668 gallons of water in a 3 month period for 3 people. In the summer, our water plus sanitation bill can reach close to $300, which is equivalent to your $100/month, but that's the extreme on our end during the summer.

We usually use between 25 and 35 hundred cubic feet ever 3 months for a family of 5. That includes a washing machine. IS is using 20 hundred cubic feet a month! I agree with what other have said. You have a leak. If it's on your side of the meter, the water company is not responsible for it. It's the property owner's problem. If your bill is high, I can guarantee that the leak is on your side of the meter. If it was on the other side, your bill would be much lower. You need to call your landlord and complain.
