Fair? Since when is it fair for a school of 100 boys to play a school of 500 or 700 boys? Yeah it is easy to criticize but if you have classes then this would not be an issue.

 

The battle small schools have been fighting forever...

 

I believe NCC is also a small school. Since when was it fair to screw NCC or Highlands from making it to region when they are clearly the best to teams in district.

 

Do not compare NCC to Bellevue or Dayton because maybe their enrollment is within 200 kids of them. There is a definate difference and enrollment is only a little to do with it...

 

And if they want to get to regionals they have to beat the best anyways... The same two teams are there every season and I for one think it will be nice just to have someone different there from the 36th...

 

 

MC we are in agreement that the system is screwed up. And yeah I understand that neither team is as good as the other three. That is why they take their chances on the draw which by the way this draw doesn't happen very often!

 

Exactly.... This is the perfect draw for the small schools and it only happens every once in a blue moon. Chalk this one up as a vicory for the little guys.

 

I think everyone needs to quit bellyaching and each team needs to come ready to play in every game during this tournament. YOu never know what could happen. So what, does Highlands want a cakewalk into the finals or how about NCC? Go out and play ball and quit worrying about a couple of small schools getting a chance to earn a trip to the Regional tournament. Back in 76' didnt Bellevue go to the Regional tourney behind Steve Ridder and beat the Bluebirds. Who knows what could happen.

 

I think its fine and you never know who could get upset. I do think Bellevue will probably win the game vs. Dayton as the Greendevils are just too banged up and playing too many younger players. Coach Vories will have the Tigers ready to play.

 

Highlands was going to face NCC anyway in the likely final so why not get em out of the way early. This way if they make it to the finals they can rest McGraw for the REgional tourney as I think a McGraw'less Bird team can still beat Bellevue. I'd rather have him play a tough first game then a tough final or 2nd game. Probably getting way ahead of myself here as the Breds and Wildcats are going to have something to say but just my opinion.

 

I agree with a lot of this.... I believe it was just last season when Highlands played Dayton at Dayton in the district and was heavily favored only to be taken right down to the wire and eek out a close win. Everything about that game was quickly swept under the rug because Highlands played some good basketball to make a run in the regional but I can't help but wonder now if a few bounces went the other way and the Birds didn't pull that one out would this conversation even be happening??? I know some of the opinions might be a little more humbled...

 

 

Don't discount Dayton either against Bellevue... They had a lot of injuries but they are slowly but surely getting healthy. They lost one guy for the season with an ACL but everyone else should at least be dressed tomorrow in which I believe if you want to get a good gauge on the district head down to Dayton tomorrow night and watch Bellevue and Dayton play for the third time this season. They split the first two meetings...

HDE again programs that vote against seeding are doing what is best for their schools. It is not their job to meet some arbitrary standard you have decided upon. It is also not their fault they are put in a position of having to play schools much larger than they are in the district tourney (yes although NCC is in the All A they are still roughly double the 10 - 12 enrollment of both Dayton and Bellevue). Yeah I don't think anybody is going to argue that Bellevue's and dayton's talent is inferior to Highlands a 5 A school in football with those two being two of the smallest A schools in the state. Bellevue and Dayton could combine enrollment and would still be smaller than Newport, NCC and HIghlands.

It sends a signal to their players that they can't compete. If you can't beat the bigger schools in your own district you aren't going anywhere anyway.

Programs that vote against seeding don't want to EARN a berth in the regional. They are hoping to catch a break and admitting inferiority.

 

Haha... I find this funny because haven't they already been showing inferiority the past umpteenth years by the same two teams being there all the time. I don't believe you will have anyone from Bellevue or Dayton come up to you and say that "We are a superior team to Highlands, Newport, and NewCath." Now they might tell you that on any given night anything can happen but as far as talent level goes, I would venture to say that at those two schools they don't even have try outs. If you want to play and you show up, your on the team. Some kids sitting out at HHS and NC would be big contributors at Bellevue/Dayton. So I really don't think Bellevue or Dayton would mind too much in admitting "inferiority" in terms of basketball talent. While they are at it they can admit to inferiority in enrollment size, copetition amongst teammates for spots, less players in the program etc. etc. etc.

I vote that the KHSAA mandate that all districts seed.

 

It would at least seem to make sense that all districts within a given region either seed or not, to avoid the scenarios theoldguy is describing above?? We need to remember a district's "to seed or not" vote often affects schools outside their district!!

No it doesn't. The players at the small schools aren't stupid. Their coaches aren't coming up to them and saying "HEY! We have a better team than anyone in the district!" They watch the games, they know what they are up against, and they know what their coaches are going to tell them. They tell them, yeah, we might be at a disadvantage, but ya know what, we can compete, we go out there and leave it all on the floor and come back to this locker room with nothing left and let the chips fall where they may and whatever happens happens from there. A lot of times it isn't enough, but they aren't sending any kind of signal that the players don't already know. Every once in a fair while, the "inferior" team wins. I don't mean to keep referencing one game but I do because its recent, in that Highlands/Dayton district game last year I think it was very obvious that Dayton simply ran out of depth. Small school, decent talent year, hangs with the big boys for all up until the last 30 seconds, when two senior starters foul out and a freshman has to be inserted simply because that is all that was left. As it would go, the kid makes a bad pass and Simpson seals it with a bucket to give em the 5 point lead. Small schools can get close and sometimes when the stars align they can do it. None of those kids at Bellevue or Dayton are going to go into the district championship to hand the team from the other bracket the trophy. They know they may be at a disadvantage, but they won't be there to lose...

I see what they are saying about the region being affected but until its a regional vote things won't change.

Again when a school goes to vote it is not the job of the AD to worry about how it will affect others only his school. Honestly fo you think Dayton cares if they vote to seed or not seed (ony using them as an example) how it affects Boone or Connor?????

Seeding is great for the successful teams and the blind draw is great for the underdogs. Having the blind draw does water down the regional tournament and make the road to the finals easier for a team. Who wouldn't want to draw Bellevue or Dayton in the regionals? No disrespect but it would basically be a night off for the starters giving them the edge in the second round. IMO, all districts should seed. Upsets will still occur in the districts but the regional tournaments will be the best teams for the most part. Why have a system that penalizes the best teams so the inferior teams can go to the regionals and get beat up on by another superior team? Doesn't make sense.:confused:
