February 1, 200818 yr I made that mistake too. I actually counted the bus driver originally, and that was my mistake. Here's a hint: You are WAY off. Hope that helps. Can you tell me if I'm way too low or way too high?
February 1, 200818 yr 7 girls = 14 legs 49 big cats = 196 legs Let's assume the big cats have 7 kittens each, but have not given birth yet. So that would be 210 visible legs. 212 if you count the driver (and assume 2 legs). Is that fair, 5Wide? Duh...
February 1, 200818 yr Author Uh oh...I feel like a goof now. Someone needs to take my posting privileges away. I forgot to add one critical component to this problem. No wonder nobody has given the correct answer. Here's what it should say: "Seven girls are on a bus. Each girl has seven backpacks. Each backpack has seven big cats. Each big cat has seven little cats. How many legs are there inside the bus?" Can a moderator change the original question for me? Sorry for the omission.

Now I say 10,990 (assuming we're not counting the driver) 7 girls = 14 7 girls X 7 backpacks per girl X 7 big cats (343 big cats) X 4 legs = 1,372 343 big cats X 7 little cats X 4 legs = 9,604 legs 14+1372+9604 = 10,990 legs unless the bus driver counts
February 1, 200818 yr PS, at first I thought it was one of those "as I was going to St. Ives" questions.

I guess it's not as tough after all when you're given all of the information.

Good math.

February 2, 200818 yr Unless the bus driver is driving with his hands, wouldn't there be 2 more? Doesn't say the bus was driving anyway. Maybe the girls were just sitting on the bus by themselves, gossiping and discussing the best place to buy cat food.
February 2, 200818 yr Author Unless the bus driver is driving with his hands, wouldn't there be 2 more? Nothing in the original problem stated that the bus is actually moving, therefore a bus driver is not necessary.
February 3, 200818 yr I got this on an email this past week. 10990 is the answer they do not count the bus driver. The only way you could open the rest of the email was to type in the correct answer.
February 3, 200818 yr Nothing in the original problem stated that the bus is actually moving, therefore a bus driver is not necessary. Then why were they sitting on a bus with no driver apparently going nowhere with their laps filled with 7 backpacks and bunch of freaking cats running around?
