I think they should. I don't know about the rule or what it was meant for. However, IMO I think it teaches the kids some self respect to a certain extent and keeps them from looking like slobs.

Shirts come untucked because the players refuse to tie their shorts up and then blouse them so there is only about 3 inches holding them in. If society had maintianed levels of respect and decency then the referees wouldn't be fashion police. Who wants to see some kids shorts at their ankles and I much prefer seeing underwear at the Victoria's Secret fashion show than most of a sweaty high schooler's boxers.

 

We have gone reverse, basketball shorts were short and if you look at some of the old pictures you could see the bottom of cheeks now you see the crack from the top.

They would stay tucked in better if they would pull their shorts up some!!!!

Sometimes a player can not help that his shirt comes untucked frequently.

 

Take this situation: The player is a big guy, say in the 6'9'' range, and his jersey is way too short to be tucked in all the time, due to the fact the jersey is modeled on a say, 6'3' type body.

 

Sure, the school could order him a bigger jersey (99.9% of schools won't), or the referee could understand the situation the player is facing, and realize therefore, then cut the player some slack.

 

Most of the time the large sized player is repeated warned and warned again, even after repeated retucking, trying to keep the jersey tucked in. The untucked jersey is not the players fault on purpose, but the harrassment by the referee is.

 

I say , if the untucked jersey is not the players fault in respect to his size, leave it alone, but if the untucked jersey is purposely done by a player, then it should be addressed.

I also witnessed a referree in the 16th region stop a game for a jersey out. Had to put in a sub. What the old coot wasn't looking for was the opposing team grabbed this boy every trip down the court which pulled it out. He was the fashion police. In olympic boxing, time is called in the contest if one of the contestants loses his mouthpiece. It is a danger for him. However, in amatuer basketball, I see no danger in a player with his jersey out. I would hope that the officials have enough on their plate without being the fashion police. If play stops, ask the player to tuck it in. But to stop the game by blowing the whistle in the middle of play is a bit overkill.

I have noticed the new style uniforms with the tighter shirts seem to stay tucked in better.

The shirts should be made to where they would have clips on the bottom of them that would clip on to the athletic supporters. Problem solved !!!!!!:ylsuper:
