In the 70's when I played dunks were banned. If you got caught doing it in warmups your team was given a technical.

 

That is still a rule today. But in the 70's you're saying that you were banned from dunking in the games also?

Has NewCath ever had anyone considered a great dunker? I remember Brian Dance threw down a couple in his career, but they weren't what I considered acrobatic. I know that Aaron Mann could throw down some nice dunks when shooting around, but I don't remember him doing it in a game. Corey Myers could, but I don't know that he did more than a couple of times. Ronny Dawn could really get up and attack the rim, but he always laid it in as oppossed to throwing it down. For the older guys in here, during the 60's, 70's, and 80's, were there any guys who could really throw down?

Ask Timmy O about Charlie Craddock (sp) class of 76, very athletic and could dunk with ease. As good as Charlie was I remember NC playing Male at NC, Male rated number 1 in state NC rated number 2. Charlie put up a hook shot only to have it taken out of the air by one hand. The player from Male was Darell Griffin.

I was looking through this thread and noticed that no one has said anything about University Heights.....My guess would be that Scotty Hopson is probably their best dunker. Anyone think anything different?

 

UHA came to Hazard during the 93-94 season and they had are fans going crazy with all the dunks!! During the game, Greg Buckner had a real nice dunk!! So I would say Greg Buckner, Lamont Barnes, Isiah Victor would all have to be considered as the best dunkers from UHA, could be others I have forgot. :thumb:

Williams from Bourbon County was the best dunker I've seen in person. I still remember playing in the AAU tournament of '90, we played Lexington Salvation Army and they had a loaded squad with Williams and Nimbo Hammonds. Coach put me into the game and I remember trying to take a charge against Williams. When I saw his junk in my face I went into matador mode.

 

For his height Russ Chadwell was a very good dunker. I have a few photos of him in one of my albums from the state tournament.

Cumberland High School had a team full of great dunkers in the early 80's. They had the best talent in the state one season but lost to Clay in the regional finals.
