Somewhat of an unfair statement given Leach had spoken to the admin about leaving (on his own) 3 weeks prior to the big blowup. This has already been discussed on other threads. Reasons were never disclosed (as they should not be) other than they were personal.

I have no axe to grind with anybody in Greenup.

 

One lemon in the coaching spot every now and then is understandable. Three or four in a row starts to look less like a problem with the coach and more a sign of problems elsewhere.

 

Maybe you can convince me that GCHS is just on a string of bad luck. But Hicks, Sutton, Hampton and Leach are all decent coaches and good men. Looking in from the outside, it's really hard to believe the trouble is just with the coaches.

I agree. Seems to me that after SEVERAL bad outcomes with this approach, the administration would try something different! Hire the best man for the job, without parent input, and support him! Seems to me like Smith and Sutton have bailed the program out twice in the last two years and one of them should be given the chance to start from the beginning of the season and see how they can do.

 

I also have a question for athos83, you said Smith was there and set the punishment for the player, does that mean Leach resigned BEFORE the punishment was determined? If that is the case, then seems to me there was no support from the administration and that very well could have been a HUGE factor into Leach deciding to resign.. The punishment should have been determined BEFORE a new coach was appointed.

The principle told Coach Hampton he had the job before the committee ever met. The superintendent told the principle he couldn't hire him like that and it was off. As for Coach Sutton why would you try for a job that your principle has told you was already filled. Things will never change untill they start at the very top and clean house. Maybe then they can start from scratch.

Sutton was never told the job was already filled, he was encouraged to apply. Coach Hampton was not told he had the job before the interviews, the super did not instruct the principal on the hiring procedures. As stated in earlier posts, the principal could have hired anyone he wanted, nothing illegal about it. The principal opted to go with a committee, the decision was made based on the highest scoring candidate after interviews were conducted. If you know someone on the committee, I am sure they can tell you how the applicants ranked after interviews.

I AM NOT taking up for Leach or what he did. Read my posts and you'll understand, I have said many times that Smith and/or Sutton should be given a chance to coach the team from the beginning of the season. The Administration support is a huge issue at Greenup, that is why there are so many comments/concerns.

My bad I was going on what one committee member and two from the central office told me. I thought they knew what they were talking about.

Having graduated from there in the 80's and having 2 kids attend school there for awhile and also having one of them involved in athletics, and having coached some as well in the elementary / middle school level, let me affirm that it truly HAS been in disarray for quite some time.

 

IMO, the disarray has almost always been caused by two things;

1- Border wars (South Shore Vs Greenup/Wurtland)

2- Depending on what your last name is, certain "last names" have and has almost always controlled the school administration no matter which administration that's been in office.

 

Someone made a statement awhile back on a post that said, that if the powers that be in the 70's would have decided to build 2 high schools instead on 1, these things we are talking about now, would "almost" be non-existent.

You are right, Coach Ward served there for quite a few years, but the relationship was most assuredly a love/hate relationship between himself and the fans, some big "last names" and a few members of the administration. But the key with Randy IMO involved two things.

1 - he did not give them any "ammunition" against him (until the hooters incident)

 

2- To his credit, he could have cared less about what fan's thought of him. He believed in his style of play and won games with it (and is still winning with it)

I totally agree with that.

Any good basketball program will play solid defense and rebound the ball.

There is talent in the GC basketball program at the present time.

Just heard today that GC will have a new super. next year, Younce is retiring after this year, that could make the basketball coaches job a little more interesting.
