January 28, 200818 yr Definetley agree about the pitching. Here's the issue with the top 3. Remember you state there may not be any other options. Freel can't play every day so you have to platoon with Hopper. Thats OK until Freel goes down. I like Kepp and if he builds on last year then he's fine. No way Jr plays half the season this year. Plus can the center fielder cover for both Dunn and Jr? Only if he's a young Willie Mays. I may be wrong but I just don't think this lineup is functional. Guess we'll find out in a couple of months. Dunn and Jr are no worse in the field than the Red Sox choices, are they? Freel is good for the first half the season till his kamikaze style wears his body down. REmember the thread is about opening day and the beginning of the season. 1st game after All-Star break, I don't necessarily think that this is the lineup.

Hopefully they won't be out of it at the break.

January 28, 200818 yr Nothing wrong with that type of flashback. A flashback to a better and easier time in REDS history!
January 28, 200818 yr Its hard to give Gonzalez a mulligan for last year. You CANNOT have a good year offensively and a poor one defensively and claim you had a poor defensive year because of his child. It is/was a terrible situation, but if you can hit the ball, you can field the ball. Actually I think its a lot easier concentrating for 5-6 pitches at the most than 10-15 minutes at a time per inning in the field. He might have averaged 4 AB's a game compared to 40 batters a game. Bandit - couldn't agree with you more. You are either distracted or you're not. The single toughest thing to do in all of sports is to hit a 3" diameter white ball thrown 90+ mph. To say he was able to do fairly well at this because he was able to concentrate at those moments, but then not be able to take that same level of concentration out to the field just doesn't equate in my book either.
January 29, 200818 yr One has alot more time for their mind to wonder while in the field than during an AB.
February 2, 200818 yr Well you would hope the new closer, Cordero, does his job and we can use Burton as his set-up man. If that happens you have the 8th and 9th innings wrapped up. Your gonna mix guys in the 6th and 7th based on the situation and the hitters to bat and so forth. The REDS offense has been good enough over the past few seasons to keep you in games. If Belisle can continue what he did at the end of last season then you have 3 very solid starters. If one more guy out of the many they will try in that 4 and 5 spot steps up, it could be an interesting season. I like the Affeldt signing a bunch! How bout Weathers? I think getting the closer was the big thing. Moving everyone down one place in that pen and getting rid of stanton were the things that stuck out to me. IMO it would also been great to add one more solid #2or 3 type starter in case all these young guys don't pan out. In a weak division we're lookin good.

Drew is a much better defensive outfielder than Jr. Either Ellsbury or Crisp is far superior defensively to anyone that the Reds can put out there. Manny, although he can be a butcher out there at times, still has a strong and accurate arm and he plays the Monster at Fenway extremely well so for at least 81 games his defense is not a negative.
