I just think it would be bad for Kentucky football. It may not be a bad situation at the start, but I think it would become a bad situation. You could have small school that is a basketball power, then have another small school that is seen as a football power. Student/athletes could transfer to the basketball school and play football for the football power.

Every public high school in the state fields a basketball team. That isn't true for football.

 

The solution is simple ... allow the arrangement for football only.

What, or who, would decide what school the non football schools would play for? Would all the players at a non football school have to play for one particular football playing school? Or, would they be able to attend any football playing school?

The concept works in Illinois. Schools sign a cooperative agreement, and all the athletes at one school that wish to play football are eligible at only one other school.

Maybe the rule has changed, but can an athlete not play for a school that offers a sport that his school does not offer? I know this used to be possible. When Fairview suspended football in the 90's, several Fairview players attended Fairview and played football for Raceland.

 

I agree with Ram on this one. If you want to play football transfer to the school that has football. If you can play for the school. You can afford to attend that school.

What are some of the things that can be done to greatly improve Kentucky high school football?

 

Please, don't make this a public/private debate, if you think that a split between public and private would be an improvement for high school football, then state that and let it go. I would prefer this thread does not get moved to the public/private forum.

 

The way that I see it, there are two major groups that can improve high school football: the state (KHSAA), and the individual schools.

 

KHSAA - I would like to see the KHSAA put more stringent penalties on schools that violate KHSAA regulations, such as recruiting. I would like the State Championship made into a bigger event. I would like the KHSAA vote down any type of split in public/private.

 

I would like to see the KHSAA put in place more opportunities to promote Kentucky high school players. I think the new East/West game will be helpful in this category, I hope the KHSAA makes this a huge event and continues this game for a long time.

 

I would like to see the KHSAA start sponsoring Senior Combines, possible four, in different regions. And invite the college coaches to attend. I have been told that college coaches to not put much stock in combines that they can't attend.

 

Individual Schools - several schools have put a lot of money into their facilities. I would like to see more school place a priority on improving their facilities. I know that all schools can not afford to put turf in, but all schools can make improvements. Even if it is small improvements over time.

 

Use media sources to the fullest. Some schools do not like the local paper in their region or does not try to get as much publicity from the newspaper as possible. Make the media a resource and use it as much as possible.

 

I have heard this comment on BGP many times, " there are many athletes walking the hall at my school and not playing football". Coaches need to make a priority of getting as many players on the field at their schools as possible.

 

Many schools need to put a priority on their off season programs. Utilize this time to improve. I know many school have quality off season program, and other schools have a off season program, but it could be improved. Make the off season a priority.

 

Get the communities as involved as possible. Make the communities part of the program. This will encourage young kids to want to play for their school. This will do a lot to improve future numbers and create a sense of ownership for the community.

Sure there is. The new playoff format versus the old playoff format. The possibility of a single elimination tournament for the playoffs, like Indiana. Four class, five classes, or six classes. Minimum requirements for facilities before hosting a home game, or a playoff game. All-State and Mr. Football voting. Starting date being move up, moved back, length of season. The location for the championship game. All-Star games.

 

There are plenty of topics to discuss, to improve Kentucky High School Football.

 

If people look at this thread and can find nothing else to talk about, then Public/Private, then they need to investigate football around the state.

I would like to see KY go to college hashmarks much like Texas etc. I also wish there were mandatory play clocks in the endzone of every field. Those are a little off the wall things but they are on my wish list:) I would LOVE to see the hashmarks changed though.

Unfortunately, what I think would improve football would go against what the state thinks is best for education.

 

Personally, I think the cap on school enrollments has hurt football in particular. Oldham County, for instance, could field 2 very competitive teams. But, they have 3 high schools, and I think a 4th is in the works. Boone County...look what's happened there.

 

Of course, I also don't see the need to build whole new schools to achieve smaller class sizes. But that's a different debate!

I would love to see a play clock. I had not considered the college hashes, but I think I might like that as well.

The playoffs are always a topic for discussion. The way that I see it there are two basic options to make the playoffs better. One option makes, making the playoffs a big accomplishment. The second option gives everyone a shot at a championship.

 

Option 1 Only the top two teams in each district make the playoffs. This makes, making the playoffs a big accomplishment. And, makes the regular season more important. The season could start at the current dates and still have the championship game around Thanksgiving. There would be no need for the first round of the playoffs, and there would be less blow outs in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

 

Option 2 Have a single elimination tournament, with everyone making the playoffs. Everyone has a mythical chance at a State Championship, and everyone has, at least, one addition game. Indiana does this with twice as many teams at Kentucky. This would only add one addition week to the current playoff format. Four team districts would have a week off in week one. Five team districts, the number one seed would have a buy week in week one of the playoffs. Six team districts the number one and number two teams would have a buy in week one of the playoffs.

 

I used to heavily favor Option 1, but after the last discussion on this topic, I would really like either one, and possible favor Option 2, slightly.

 

Current playoff format:

Top four teams in each district make the playoffs. The districts consist of either four, five, or six teams. Very few six team districts.

 

Current class and district numbers:

1A - 32 teams make the playoffs, 41 team, eight districts, one - four team district, five - five team districts, 2 - six team districts, 9 teams do not make the playoffs, 78% of the teams make the playoffs.

 

2A - 32 teams make the playoffs, 33 teams, eight districts, one - five team district, 7 - four team districts, only one 2A team does not make the playoffs, 96% of the teams make the playoffs.

 

3A - 32 teams make the playoffs, 40 teams, eight districts, two - four team districts, five - five team districts, one - six team district, eight teams do not make the playoffs, 80% of the teams make the playoffs.

 

4A - 32 teams make the playoffs, 36 teams, eight districts, five - four team districts, three - five team districts, four teams do not make the playoffs, 88% of the teams make the playoffs.

 

5A - 32 teams make the playoffs, 37 teams, eight districts, four - four team districts, four - five team districts, four teams do not make the playoffs, 86% of the teams make the playoffs.

 

6A - 32 teams make the playoffs, 36 teams, eight districts, five - four team districts, two - five team districts, one - six team district, four teams do not make the playoffs, 88% of the teams make the playoffs.

 

Overall - 223 football playing schools, 192 teams make playoffs, 31 teams do not make playoffs, 86% of the teams make the playoffs, 14% of the teams do not make the playoffs.
